Is Jarts inspired from golf?
« on: January 06, 2006, 02:38:50 PM »
Tom MacWood's reply in another thread got me thinking about the vital American game of Jarts, or JARTS as it's pronounced in some circles.

While it may be lacking in some strategic aspects, in many ways it emulates today's aerial game of golf as played on the PGA tour.

Will technological advances also ruin JARTS or will its traditions remain for future generations?

This is obviously a topic we could delve very deeply into.

Before delving into it deeply it'd be nice to know what it is first. Would the most significant influence on it happen to be the "Arts and Crafts" movement by any chance? ;)

I think they ruined Jarts when they moved away from the  steel-tipped, pointed originals to the sissy, "injury-free" versions in play today.   :)

There's nothing quite so relaxing as watching a bunch of kids heaving sharp, pointed flying objects as high in the air as possible.  That is, if you don't mind winding up on "Tales of the ER."

No JARTS is not derived from golf. If it were derived from golf it would be called DOLF!

Tom,

I'm really surprised that the folks on the Main Line or out in the Hamptons seemingly missed out on this.

The parallels to modern golf are simply staggering....not the least of which is being ruined by an adminstrative body and advances in technology.

John Kavanaugh,

You put your post right back on here, young man!

That had me laughing so hard I was crying here at my desk.

Wasn't Jarts actually inspired by murder?

Mike-

I bet the JARTS legal team was quite busy during the 70's and 80's! I must say, I looked at the product packaging on your link, fully expecting to see dear old Mom with a JART sticking out of her cranium.

Your comparison of JARTS, and the modern aerial game
is worth considering. I say, put a safer balata tip on those old metal jarts and get em' back on the market!

The safest place to stand while playing Jarts was always inside the ring. I also thought they were invented by someone who thought horseshoes just weren't dangerous enough.

You must check out this website, and in particular, get your reading glasses on and look at the "warning disclaimer" on the left.

http://www.jarts.com/page2.html

I'm reminded of two sayings;

"If we outlaw Jarts, only criminals will have jarts."

and, of course;

"Jarts don't kill people, people using jarts kill people."

;D
