I don't know what camp I am in.

I often ask myself, "Do I truly think this is a great course or do I have that impression because I know I am supposed to think this is a great couse?"

I have never sorted out the answer.

That's a good one, Jason, and one we should all adhere to.  I don't think that any of us honestly has (or even can have) the answer to that question.

On second thought, with apologies to Dr. Rotella, I'm going with "Golf architecture is not a game of perfect."

Did C & C get the best 18 holes out of the millions ::) that appear on the famous constellation map?  Connect the dots on any 18 and I'd wager you still get the top modern course in the game.

Sometimes I think the modern guys are trying a little too hard.  Then again, Pinehurst #2, Pine Valley and National Golf Links of America must certainly reflect the genius and craftsmanship of men wanting to get it just right.

I'm in the Hillbilly Tour wannabe camp.  They don't have no counselors, activity coordinators or lesson pros; and play where ever shoes are optional, and refreshments available.
No actual golf rounds were ruined or delayed, nor golf rules broken, in the taking of any photographs that may be displayed by the above forum user.

"Badges?  We don't have to show you no stinkin' badges....."

Sorry, momentarily distracted there!

My credo?

I love to play golf, not particularly medal play, scorecard-and-pencil golf but match play type golf.

I will tee it up pretty much anywhere and have done so in my 50 years of golf.

But given my druthers?

I would prefer more than anything to be playing the classics of the '00s, '10s, '20s and '30s, OR any of the many modern courses whose architects have chosen to reflect the values that make those classic courses so cherished to me and many others.

There are many golfers in this world who will happily play anywhere.  Me too, but I sure prefer my druthers!   ;)
