Gentlemen all.  Can anyone tell me of their impressions of this Scottish seaside links; I will be in St Andrews for almost a week when playing the Old Course in reverse April next, and feel attracted to this course.  Their website is delicious!  I will be based in Crail.

Paul:

I really enjoy playing the Montrose Medal Course, and not just because it is the 4th oldest course in the world. The links is a regular Open qualifying venue, and like several Scottish links, it is not short on eccentricity: a 4-5 putt green (16th) known as "Gully" that is the culmination of a 235 yard par-3.

On the 5th hole, a tiny bunker lies in the middle of the fairway, and rest assured, someone in your group will find it, then proceed to drop an expletive!

The links boasts one of the most majestic par 3's in Scotland -the 4th hole (Table) on high - across a huge ravine to an interestingly angled green.

Golfers who like the look of golden gorse, a la Royal Dornoch, and Royal County Down prior to its recent hacking back, will find much to admire here. One section of the links, the far end, literally teems with the plant.

The opening hole - invariably into a gale - sets off straight uphill. It will remind you instantly of Lahinch's opener, but this is 391 yards and a real brute.

In spite of being only 6500 yards, you'll come off the last green felling like you've been 'through the ringer' ... but deeply satisfied.

Mr. Daley

I assume you mean "wringer" or does Montrose also feature tintinabulation?

PS--don't worry about the gorse at RCD--it will grow back, as and how they wish it to.

ForkaB:

Yep, you're dead right: wringer with a "w" and minus the tintabulation.

Just out of curiosity, what nationality is Forka?  :D
