Thanks in advance....

Paul -

Ultra-exclusive. One of the better Fazio's I've played recently, especially
in regards to the bunkers. Don't know who shaped this, but it was a real
and welcome departure from classic and recent Fazio layouts. Much more of a naturalism approach and pretty successful. Pretty good variety. Difficult but playable. Big beef that it's not walkable, and that has to do with the journeys from greens to next tees. Worth playing.

Am hoping to venture out there before year's end. I've been there for a meeting and it is really great-  a fabulous Spanish clubhouse, very lavish, almost like someone's home. Out of this world food. I've been told that Mark McGuire is a member and has shelled out something like 15 mil all told for his house and guest house. I think membership is at least 150K.

When I got out of my car, the first person I ran in to was McGuire. Really
nice guy. Lots of other sports types are members. I think Jim Rome as well. I think the $150,000 is way low. Maybe double that now.

By far the best Fazio I've played to date with a really great Director of Golf in Brian Gunson of Turnburry, Scotland.

Some dud holes, but some pretty good ones too. I'll try to post some images later.

Below is a link to Shady Canyon's website.  It features a very good hole-by-hole tour with comments from Fazio.  There are also some photos of the clubhouse and other amenities.

On the website, it says the current membership fee is $260,000 with dues at $995/month.

Link works but the pictures are so small, it's hard to see. Wonder why they did it that way?
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

I can't beleive the busy sales crap on that web site?  Shouldn't the course sell itself?  I guess that's what happens when business comes first.

Paul,

The course is wonderful.  It is certainly up there with Victoria National, GlenWild and Shadow Creek on my short list of favorite Fazio's.  Tommy is right about the staff and Pro as well, they are first class all they way.  It is well worth seeing.

And I took full blame then, and retain such now.  My utter ignorance in not trumpeting a course I have never seen remains inexcusable.

I also agree it is a very good course.  Scenic, too, besides the architecture.  IMO, it is as good as another of Fazio's (built at the same time) that is high on several of the lists, which I found to be overrated.

Big beef that it's not walkable, and that has to do with the journeys from greens to next tees.

I walked it (with a caddie) and didn't find it to be that bad.  Like you said, some of the uphill treks to some of the tees were steep.  I just took a few seconds to catch my breath and enjoy the scenery (there was practically no one around).

My caddie pointed out McGwire's house being built (at the time) on top of one of the hills.  Several other athletes are members there....and supposedly Jim Rome doesn't play golf.

Yes, Mr. Gunson is a very nice fellow.

I played Shady Canyon the year it opened. I thought it would rank very high in Golf Digest's new course ranking.  It did not.  The club had made a decision only to let the minimum number of raters (10) play.  It hurt them and still does.  Courses would be better off not allowing any panelists to play than only a handful.  It takes only a couple low scores to  kill a course.

I thought it was a masterful routing on difficult terrain and that Fasio had bunkered the course well.  He also used the natural lanscaping nicely throughout the course.  I'd love to go back and see how it has developed.
