West Coast of Florida in Jan.?
« on: December 14, 2005, 08:12:03 AM »
I received this email from a friend. Any input?

  Michael,

I'm interested in courses that are good deals in the 40 mile stretch between Venice and Ft Myers, Fla (this includes Port Charlotte and Cape Coral).  If there any super notable ones north of Venice around Sarasota they would be nice for the last day.

Thanks.

I would suggest the semi-private Venetian Golf&River Club in North Venice/South Sarasota.

I really enjoyed Eastwood in Fort Myers (Devlin/Von Hagge). Other than World Woods its the only course I've played in Florida without houses all over it and its a nice course. I believe the city owns it and its not always in the best shape (although not terrible by any means), but its still worth a play, some good par fives and a fun cape hole (#10). It is crowded though, and if you can get their twilight rate it used to be about half the normal rate.

My other experiences in the area were nothing too special. Coral Oaks (Hills) is average but not awful, GC at Cape Coral was redone since I was there last. Pelican Sound was way too narrow for my liking. Hope that helps some.

Mayday, I would add Sarabay as well, though it is just on the north edge of Sarasota.

South of Englewood in El Jobean is Riverwood. A Bates design I played many times after it opened and found the back 9 to be as good as any South of Tampa. The housing at that time was barely underway and it may have encroached and totally messed the place up. Someone else on here may have a more current opinion.

I haven't played there but this course is managed by Troon Golf, so it will be in good shape:

I played Bobby Jones Golf Club this summer and it wasn't bad and was pretty cheap.  Also Fort Myers CC is a public Ross that is priced right and fairly inexpensive.

Mayday,
Bobcat Trail in North Port was very enjoyable.

I also enjoyed the TPC at Prestancia, in Sarasota

My friend appreciates the input; he knows how "crazed" this group is in their analysis.

Sort of anxious to know about Bobcat Trail Golf Club, designed by BobTway, completed in 1999, located in North Port.

Jim, we have here on the East Coast, Quail Valley Golf Club, and I believe Pinnacle Golf, LLC was involved with Bobcat.
