What architectural features do you discount when playing match play that you give far more consideration to when playing medal play ?

How do they affect your particular game ?

I can only think of circumstance driven DISCOUNTING. And in the right circumstances I might DISCOUNT just about any feature with the goal of staying alive.

Pat,

In my match play experience, I think I've most often ignored OB.

OB can be devastating in a stroke play format, since stroke and distance is never good. However, in match play, the loss of the shot and distance can only be as bad as losing the hole and apart from that, no circumstances carry over to the next hole.

Absolutely none!

I always tried to play stroke play pretty conservatively simply to avoid mistakes, stupid or otherwise. I pretty much played match play the same way unless my opponent was virtually out of the hole then I played really conservatively or aggressively if I could clearly see that was called for because of something he'd done.

The real difference I felt between match play and stroke play is to me match play was more relaxing as there were numerous times you could relax for a while unlike stroke play where you pretty much have to keep on concentrating without stop for about 4 1/2 hours. That's why I always felt stroke play was much harder to do.

"You need to make a slippery 10 footer that in stroke play, you'd lag for fear of a 3 whack."

Shiv:

What's the DISCOUNTED FEATURE on that slippery downhill putt---lack of friction and physics?  ;)

TEPaul,

So, you give no undue weight to highly penal features in either match or medal play, choosing to play the ultra conservative route ?

Would you go for the 18th green at NGLA in two if you were one down and within striking distance or would you opt to play conservatively guaranteeing you of a birdie putt, but, knowing that your opponent not only might do the same thing, but probably would, forcing you to have to make birdie ?

Pat:

Funny you should ask that. In the finals of the senior division a few years ago and playing Jarrett Kling of Philly I was one up on him on #17. He birdied it and I didn't. On #18 we both were on in three and he knocked in about a 50 foot birdie putt. I had about a 25 footer just to tie the match which was a bit of a shock since on #17 tee I felt pretty good about winning the match. I knocked in my birdie putt and we went to the first hole again. Incredibly he hit his approach to the back bowl in the same place as earlier and I hit mine in the same place as earlier. He made his birdie of about 12 feet as he had earlier and I missed mine of about 10 feet as I had earlier. It was some match.

But to answer your question I would lay up my second shot on #18 as I always do because frankly I'm not really long enough to hit that green in two. In my entire career I can only remember actually trying to hit a par 5 in two about three times. Twice I made eagle and the other time I made double eagle so why in the world would you expect me to go for the 18th at NGLA in two with a shitty career result record on par 5s in two like that? I'm an expert course manager, Pal---I just play by the percentages!  ;)
