Did you read Geoff's book yet? Me neither.

I sure am interested in that blonde winking at me from across the bar, though.

Geoff who?  BTW, is that Heidi Klum across the bar?  If so,tell her TEP is waiting for her call.

Rihc- I'll take a stab at relaying what I thought were lines of charm and now know diffrent.

As your post implies, they do often involve bunkering. But rather than it being the best line, the line of charm entices you to take a route which may or may not be the correct line. Sort of like the blonde winking.

As an aside; We've just returned from Chilli's where there was a large group of people sitting with tables bunched in the bar area. We were greeted by our sexy 40ish something bar wench LIsa, with "I'll tell you later". As we sat waiting for our meals, Sheryl had decided the large group were either cops or strippers. No sooner did she guess strippers did we find-out she was right. After their meeting broke the "girls" started working the room with flyers announcng the new management and offering all kinds of perks to get people in the door. As I sat there, next to my baby, I actually felt left out. The strippers were avoiding me like the plague. Go Figure! So I supose the moral of the story is, it's better to have a faux line, with a wink, than no line at anytime. ;)

".....no hole is a good one unless it has one or more hazards in a direct line of a hole.  Max Behr, who is one of the best American golf architects, states that the direct line to the hole is the line of instinct, and that to make a good hole you must break up that line in order to create the line of charm."

Alister Mackenzie
It must be kept in mind that the elusive charm of the game suffers as soon as any successful method of standardization is allowed to creep in.  A golf course should never pretend to be, nor is intended to be, an infallible tribunal.
