Does anyone know where I might access back issues of The National Golf Review?

It was an American magazine with a short but remarkable life, published between 1936 and early 1941. Edited by Grantland Rice. Few libraries seem to have it.

Any leads would be appreciated.

The article on Ross sounds interesting as well as the article "luck and the stymie."  I'd be all over it but my ebay account is suspened after someone tried selling some computers on my account.  I'll have to get that fixed I guess!

Additionally, the 1938 Golfer's Yearbook was published by National Golf Review, and is shown as being held at the Amateur Athletic Foundation of Los Angeles. This was a 320 page production, edited by W.D. Richardson and A.J. Morrison.

Micah - Thanks. Some of those collections I knew about. For example, I made a visit to the NYPL several weeks ago. Their volumes of TNGR are in cold storage in Princeton. (Ditto for their back issues of Golf Illustrated.) You have to ask a week or so in advance to have them transferred to NYC to see them. For a guy living in ATL, I was hoping there was an easier way. Similar travel concerns apply to the university libraries you cite.

The magazine's run was so remarkable that, ideally, I would like to be able to sit down somewhere and skim the whole set. It had a pretty short run. It was, essentially, the only national US golf magazine at the time and everyone wrote for it. And I mean everyone. Better yet, a large percentage of the pieces are on architecture and courses.

RTJ, Thompson, Ross, Tillie, Bob Jones, Richardson (of the NYT), Keeler, Rice, Crane and, I think, Darwin - the whole pantheon was contributing articles. All of which I would love to see.

I was led to TNGR initially because I was trying to find pieces that discuss reactions to ANGC, which opened in '33, but was not seen by very many people until '34 or '35. Various bibliographies take you to several articles I would love to find that seem to be on topic. But the more I've dug, the more interesting the whole run of TNGR appears to be.

On paper, with such an all-star cast of writers, you would think it would be remarkable. Unfortunately it was not all that great from an architectural point view, there is not much of interest. Mostly becasue there wasn't anything going on of interest in golf architecture during those years. Golf Illustrated and American Golfer are much more interesting. And Golfdom, which was alive during the same period, is also more interesting....although even it lags in the late 30's. MacKenzie wrote for Golfdom.

I thought Golfdom had a business focus, as in resort developments, managing country club kitchens or repairing caddy shacks. That sort of thing.

Golfdom covered the entire spectrum, including golf architecture.
