The Lines of Charm - Geoff Shackelford
« on: November 10, 2005, 07:18:51 AM »
Geoff has done it again and produced another book worth having in the library.  The Lines of Charm is a compilation of hundreds of thoughts and quotes etc from Golf's Golden Age Architects.

It is a fun read and there is a lot there to use if you are a working architect to explain theories etc to clients. One of the best things about it is the SIZE of the book.  It is the perfect size to be taken on all the trips I do throughout the year.  It will be one of those books similar to The Links that will probably be always with me.

Geoff, we may not always agree but well done again!

Does he translate Behr into English?  If so, this could be a real tour de force!

In fact there is a Behr quote on the back of the dust cover..

Blindness is certainly a subject in golf that one can go blind arguing about. - Max Behr

Brilliant!  Either Geoff (and/or Maxie) has/had a really wicked sense of humo(u)r or it is the most serendipitous double entendre I have ever seen (at least in the GCA shpere....). :)

No doubt you'll be especially interested in the chapter devoted to Old Tom Morris. The Behr quote is tailor-made for ol'Rich--double entendre.

Brian,
Thanks for the kinds words and for buying the book. It's great to hear that you find it to be a handy reference book. I had hoped architects would look at it that way, and also hope though that it's kept fun and entertaining enough to interest anyone into golf architecture.

Glad you like the size too. It was supposed to be an inch taller, and I begged for 2 inches to get cut off the top for the very reason you mentioned. We met halfway.

Thanks again,
Geoff

One of the finest books of the year, on golf or any subject. ;)
It must be kept in mind that the elusive charm of the game suffers as soon as any successful method of standardization is allowed to creep in.  A golf course should never pretend to be, nor is intended to be, an infallible tribunal.

Patrick,
There is a Lines of Charm page on my web site that has a link to Amazon's page, where they sell it at a good price..

You can also go to the publisher's site (www.greatgolfbooks.com) or order it through your local bookstore. Borders will be carrying it, I'm not sure about Barnes and Noble.
Regards,
Geoff
