Converting fairways to driveways
« on: October 25, 2005, 07:13:56 AM »
The Baltimore Sun has an article (on 10/24/05) about the number of golf courses that are being shutdown and developed for housing, shopping malls, etc. While the article does focus on what is going on in the Baltimore-D.C. area, it does mention that a record 79 courses in the U.S. have closed so far this year.

The article mentions a "longtime private course in Montgomery County" that is schedule for development. That probably refers to Indian Spring which finally will close on 12/31/2006. Its 36 holes were built in the mid-50s and from what I know of the place never had difficulty attracting members or outside play.

So is what we are seeing here a case of the famous "highest and best use" principal of real estate?  The land value is far better as a home subdivision or mall?

Sad to see it occur but I guess that is progress and new courses will be built.
The things a man has heard and seen are threads of life, and if he pulls them carefully from the confused distaff of memory, any who will can weave them into whatever garments of belief please them best.
