Will the South Ever Rise Again?
« on: October 24, 2005, 09:01:25 AM »
I don't know the final tally of this past weekend's Dixie Cup II, but I am fairly certain the South was left in the eddies.

I now know how it feels to be on the receiving end of a mauling.  Jeepers, Big Ed hits the ball further than I go on holidays.  He comfortably flies his 3 wood past the rollout of my driver.  His 5 iron goes a fair distance as well.  Big Ed could have shot in the neighborhood of 68 if his putter was switched on.

It was fantastic to see the smile on Brent's face as he informed us of his ace.  The beer was perfectly chilled and slipped down without a burp.  Cheers Brent!  Don't try to save yourself a fiver on a new shaft.  Get one of those unbreakable ones.

Doug B, aka Intensity in Ten Cities, well done.  A weekend without dropping a point.  You are one of the wildest guys I have ever played with.  Spraying your driver, slashing your irons, then suddenly an outrageous up and down for par.  How many times did you do that?  I reckon you sold your soul to the Devil.

All in all, I was impressed with courses, I especially liked The Road (I wish it was properly walkable though) and Mid Pines.  I was more impressed with the GCA folk.  To a man they seemed like sound blokes.  Thanks for giving me some laughs this weekend.

I especially would like to thank Brian, Pete, Ran and Forrest for organizing, hosting and talking.  Events like The Dixie Cup wouldn't happen if guys like you don't take charge.  It was a cracking weekend.  Cheers.

Ciao

Sean

We'll have to wait for Pete B. to tally the late matches on Sunday but we know the North team won. I suspect they won big. After Saturday's two rounds of fourball the score IIRC was 7-1/2 to 4-1/2. The five points worth of singles in the early Sunday groups were dominated by the North team 4 to 1 (with two halved matches). So at the last point where the exact score is known the North was leading by six points, 11-1/2 to 5-1/2. I think there eight matches in the late groups.

Sean-

Thank you for the compliment.  Yes, we were a good team.  Our play was certainly complimentary over the course of the day.  Well played.  Wild?  Not me.  I'm always calm and emotions in check  ;)

Spraying a driver?  Hey, be nice...I was only hooking it on Saturday morning at MP...fortunately, you played well on the holes I didn't, and I played well on the holes you needed help on.  (3, 10, 13)

I hit 7 of 11 fairways when it mattered across the street in the afternoon!  Missed fairways (within a few yards) on 1, 11, 12, 14?  No problem.  Made pars all around, 5 for 4 on 14 to put it away for the North.  Only had 2 bad holes in that round, 8 and 9, but you were good enough to pick me up there.    Yes, some good up and downs when it mattered.

Congratulations go to Martin aka Remy as well...fought me tooth and nail all day, but a great guy to play against as well.  What a seesaw match it was.  Great play from him all day and especially on 15 and 16 to go all square heading to the final two holes.  I'm quite satisfied with the half point from the singles match.
Jim Bick was also extremely pleasant to play with, and his consistent play was appreciated.  Well played, all.  Thank you for a great weekend.  More commentary to come, undoubtedly.
