The wierd things people are in to (slightly OT)
« on: October 24, 2005, 04:11:42 PM »
So I signed up to bombsquadgolf.com the other day just for kicks and to have something else golf related to browse. Now I love golf and most things about golf. I love playing golf. I love talking about golf. I love watching golf on TV. I love reading about golf. I really love golf courses. I love taking money from my best friend on the golf course.

But what is this strange fascination with photos of touring pros' bags? There are dozens of posts each with dozens (sometimes hundreds) of pics of bags from tour events.

Tim - it's simple - those guys are into Tour equipment BIG TIME.  That is, the stuff guys on Tour can get and use that us normal schmoes can't.  Pictures of Tour bags are like pictures of aliens for ufo-ologists... proof that their interest/passion is worthwhile, and the things they here and so desparately want to believe are NOT just myths.

It's not the BAGS, it's the stuff in them.

I'm assuming that's what Tim meant... they want pics of the equipment.

BSG is a haven for "Tour Equipment" junkies/geeks.  If you are into golf equipment, there is quite a lot of good info concerning the latest & greatest in golf club technology.

A Taylor Made wedge...the name refers to the shape of its grooves which the proprietor of BSG would have you believe superior to anything else out there.  Of course, they are for sale from him.

On the original post, an emerging equipment site (founded by a bunch of bee-ess-gee exiles) is Golfwrx.com , which even has a sub folder devoted to bag pics.

I signed up to that place to view some pictures once.. It's fun to look around and if I ever got that serious about my equipment, I'd check delve more in depth..
I was looking through course reviews and I found one for Crystal Downs and the next 4 or so posts were people begging for access.

made me laugh

Actually, they are into the bags as much as what goes in them. They even seriously discuss things other than clubs that go into the bags. They are into caps and shoes as well. And your logo aint shit unless a tour player wears it.

But they enjoy all that as much as some here like discovering a possible reverse redan.

And if you want to know about shaft performance, BSG is the place.

Yep. I guess you've hit the reason for my curiosity. I'm just not an equipment junkie. I've had three sets of irons 20 years. Three drivers over the last 10 years. Putters are a different story.

But still, taking the whole world of golf and being *that* into equipment seems kinda like a car buff with a carburator fixation.

Clubs are part of BSG, but there is more as well.  Lively discussions of most golf-related topics, including many that come up here.  Not much on golf course architecture per se, though there are plenty of threads that post extensive and often excellent pictures of interesting courses.  I think the guys tend to be a bit younger on BSG.  I post there about as often as I do here: several GCA regulars post there too.

Jim - understood.  I lurk there, rarely post - but I do read often.  And heck yes there is way more over there than just topics about Tour Equipment.  But I was just trying to answer the question as to why they have so many pics of Tour bags.

Seems to me to be a fun site...

Kevin Reilly thanks for the info on a Y-Cutter.

I look at BSG once and a while I have alway wondered if they like to play golf or rather collect putters and drivers that are from the tour. More tolk of "hoing" clubs than of playing.

Still a fun site to visit now and again.

And just to be clear - I think it's a fun site too. It just cracked me up to see post after post with tons of touring pro bag photos.

John Keenan,

When I first started lurking here I thought that maybe this gang liked talking about golf courses more than playing!

It's all good though. Better that we all have the internet as an outlet. Imagine if the BSG guys had to dress in squirrel outfits and steal pro equipment from tour events. That would make a funny commercial :)
