 Michael,

That is fascinating. But, in the hands of Rees Jones that dirt would have been mounded in a very different way!

Some good has come from legalized gambling at last.

What many people don't seem to remember is that the old Atlantis CC in Tuckerton (now called Ocean County at Atlantis) and run by the county parks system is that the original 18 was the handiwork of George Fazio -- his first layout and opened in 1961 and done during the time frame, if memory serves, when he served as head pro at PV. The course topped out at just under 7,000 yards and is often forgotten given all the hype associated with the courses in and around the AC area.

The existing layout is 6,848 yards and plays to a par of 72 with a 73.6 CR and 134 slope.

The original layout was a great place to play in the winter and the routing was and still is quite good.

The key holes that always were quite entertaining included the signature par-3 6th -- a downhill hole framed by water and bunkers. You also had the uphill par-5 7th dog-legging to the right which featured a blind landing zone.

The back nine weaved its way in and through the pines and the green contours / confirgurations were more complex than the standard saucer variety.

Frankly, minus the likes of Twisted Dune, Sea Oaks and Sand Barrens -- the Atlantis of yesteryear could more than meet the nature of what's been created since. In fact -- the course today receives more attention that it did during the time I often visited in the 70's.
