Adam.

Based on your visits, Stone Eagle vs Ballyneal, how would you split 10 rounds between the two?

Mike- My visits did not include golfing the courses, so, I can't reasonably answer your question. Hopefully someday I will be able to.

The course is scheduled to be opened in Nov.

Up until about two years ago, I had never golfed a Doak course. Now, it appears that I am a founding member of his butt-boy club. I assure I am not. I do appreciate thoughtful design and clearly, the styles of mainstream designers make me sick, now that I have seen what "real" golf should be.

Let's test the picture theory.

What can we tell from pictures?

The most obvious one, to me, is the recoverability aspect.

Here are some of the finishing holes.

The 16th

17th

And, the home hole.

In an attempt to give some scale, that's a full grown man on the home hole's green

Here's one of the 6th. Note; Doak's Mackenzie book p. 68 on Lahinch.

And, another one of the 6th.

Just a grow-in tip....The only problem I see with one of the pics, is the amigo cutting greens, and the fact that he is not using a mat to make turns on.  The effect, is that the collars and the approaches will get some wear problems occuring.  Oh well....They will learn.....

David, Tying those bunkers in, is amazing. I just came back from a preliminary site visit with none other than that up and coming whiz-kid, boy genius, Mike Nuzzo. The sight had all kinds of slight elevation changes, and, that really through off my ability to gauge the distances.

You all might recall that last picture as the hole Tommy started a thread on awhile back, entitled "Where is this?"

Muni, Could you elaborate on what that mat is? How it's used, and especially the justification? Please.

Muni,
FYI, the guy growing in Stone Eagle has successfully grown in a few pretty good golf courses.

Adam,
I really like the look of the 16th, but I'm wondering what the path is across the beginning of the fwy? Any idea?

Yep those are construction access routes.  They are still working on odds-n-ends including some specific areas to be sodded.  Without continuous cart paths and the type of site they have it can be difficult getting around at this point in the effort.  I am sure they will just work their way out as they can.

No continuous paths will always make overseeding a bit more difficult and cart traffic hard to manage for a period of time after.  For those of you in other parts of the country that don't see oversseding much, remember, it is like seeding a golf course and then allowing it to open in 3 weeks.

I was there on Friday.  Outstanding!

David M,
Got your IM and responded. Thanks.

David D,
Thanks for the info. As a supt who overseeded your right about the path issue. But, I'll bet a place like Stone Eagle has plans to close down for 4-5 weeks for overseeding. That's enough time to let carts on the turf, especially at a private club doing a small number of rounds.

Will anyone walk the course?

Tom or one of his guys would know best about the question of walking it.  It seems that once you get up to the course from the facilities, you could walk it with only a couple harder climbs.  In Palm Springs things are a little different.

Where is Stone Eagle?

Looks great!

Adam, how would you compare to Black Mesa?  Looks like similar terrain although no box canyons!

And how would you compare to Apache Stronghold?  Again, the terrain looks similar.

Bill,You ask great questions. I wish I could give you a more concrete opinion. But, I saw SE back in May, before most of the grass was grown-in, and traversing the entire property, in my guides SUV, wasn't comprehensive. I can tell you this, the serenity, combined with the views of the Coachella Valley, are really un-precedented (unless you a Big Horn sheep)

While superficially, BM and SE sites might look somewhat similar, I suspect their only real similarity is the scale. One thing I suspect is the internal contours on the greens, at SE, they were not as sharp as BM's, but (I suspect) rather were more sloped with the natural lay of the land. While there is no box canyon one shotters (I think) there is one teeing ground, the highest point, that utilizes the rock reparian that flows form the higher peaks.

As for a comparison to Apache, The scale of the bunkering at AS is nothing like the ones in these pictures, is it? Just as a matter of progression, I suspect SE is representative of the continued quality teamwork, that Doak and crew have evolved into. Subtle, Grand and truely should be appreciated as art.

Yes Bill.

I can say one more thing with some certainty. 3-4 years ago when Mr. Doak came on this website and hinted that a project was in the early workings, in Palm Desert, and that it would rock the Valley, with the likes of which they had never seen, golf coursewise. He delivered. Mit spades!

For everyones information........I am have been in the turf field for 9 years and have 2 grow-in's the past 2 years...I will not name the courses, because I know how you guys are....The use of mats are used around the green surrounds, collars and approaches. The mat itself is a rubber or could just be a large door mat.  the longer the mat, the more space there is to turn on.  If there is no mat, the mower will cause damage to the thin and still weak turfgrass.  that is why, a mat is used so there is no damage that the mower makes to the turfgrass.  FYI, Paul Latshaw at Murfield Village, uses make sit a point that mats are used to turn on, when someone mow's greens at Murfield Village, and that is a mature golf course...

Email or IM, if u want more info...

Here are some closer looks at some of the bunkers.

This first, is on #18, during construction

This next, is on the 8th hole, Par 5. It resides at the corner of the dogleg.

Here's the same hole with the above bunker in the lower right of the picture.
