Friar's Head Logo
« on: September 30, 2005, 12:48:41 PM »
....is hands down the best in golf.  I just noticed my hat in the closet as I was getting something.  Simple, clean, brilliant.  Tommy did a masterful job on this.

I know this is off topic to some degree, but I always think its interesting what a course comes up with for a logo.  You are always pretty much starting with a blank piece of paper and create something from scratch.

Can anyone think of one that could top Friar's Head?  I know Sand Hills has to be up there but I think Friar's got it beat.

Merion or Burning Tree. No script, just an image will always be the best.

I may be a high-handicap golfer, but as many from GCA who know me would attest, I am a "scratch" when it comes to logo evalution and pro shop assessment!

The best logos convey a sense of history and/or place and preferably both, and beyond that, it is a matter of personal preference, obviously...

While FH is a fun and distinctive logo, and has the added feature of being created by a known commodity from our our community, my feeling is that it has to wait a while before it can be compared to the following, which is just a short domestic list:

1) Merion---my top choice as the most distinctive, site-specific and identifiable logo

2-10)  Baltusrol, Chicago, Garden City, Inverness, Kittansett, Myopia, NGLA, Olympic, St Louis, Winged Foot in alpha order..

I do not tend to prefer the "badge" or "shield" or "crest"-type logos, but there are many great versions in this category as well...

Now, this discussion comes up every 6 months or so, and someone on their high horse (HBH, for example) will immediately come in and claim this is a thinly veiled attempt to determine who's a member of what club, and how to get access, so let the killjoys loose...

the Augusta logo also used to be much less crisp. Redanman

what are the Trump course logos??  are any like W Straits, which sure look like Herb Kohler.....God I hope not, cause I wouldn't want to wear a picture of that hairdo on my shirt :o

now if Trump based a logo on his wife, THAT's a different story!

A few other of my favorite logos that haven't been mentioned:
Palmetto Golf Club
Kingsley Club
Kinloch
Piping Rock  (I like the interwoven letter look, Baltimore CC's is very strong as well)
Chechessee Creek  (very subtle, as it's a feather and the spine of the feather is a pin flag)

I just recently noticed what I assume is the new logo for Gil Hanse's Boston Golf Club.  I'm not quite sure what the wooden flag is supposed to represent, perhaps just simplicity and naturalness.  It's quite similar to Merion's, any opinions on it....

Trump Logos--they appear at the end of The Apprentice, an enormous shield/badge combo with a knight's head on top or something akin to that--I think the courses are all variations on that theme...

"The ram's head from HVCC"

It's a bull's head inside a crown.

I agree with all that think Merion's is the best logo in golf.  I disagree with Burning Tree.  Its like a Christmas tree with flames out the top.  Firstly, no way should an evergreen be promoted with a logo in the middle Atlantic.  Get 'em out of here!  Second, it looks goofy.

I like the script for Boston Golf Club, it's a great font.  The wooden shillaleagh thing is oddly different.  Looks a bit like a hurling stick.

Best I know is Sunnybrook's. It's about the smallest and simplest I ever saw. It's so small and simple some people might think it's a little red-thread run on your golf shirt.

But I doubt you'll be able to get on a plane with one on your shirt...

What does it all mean?

I have to say that the Islamic totems put me off more than a little bit.  LuLu's similarly.  I think an Arabic sword is offensive and they should consider changing logos.  I'm not a strong advocate of this.  To each his own and if they don't, they don't.  I just think they should.

However, I do not understand the to do with the indian mascots and names in collegiate sports.  I don't think any of the names are debasing but rather recognizing some of the positive attributes of the tribes themselves among them loyalty, strength, courage and perserverence.

The old logo of Hop Meadow CC in CT was pretty good, I thought.  The course is on former farmland, so the logo was a nice red farmhouse.  They shanged it to this boring shield with two golf clubs crossed diagonally across it, and HMCC on it.  Not nearly as good and simplistic as the old farmhouse.

The logo of Pawleys Plantation Country Club is very simple.  The words aren't always present.

Yes, I understand your point.  I don't have a problem with the religion at all.  What little I know of it seems reasonable although I have heard other "scholars" decry a sense of pacifism in the Koran.  Many of the practitioners are far from reasonable.  They're not alone and I don't think less of them than I do the Catholic church and their past destructions of individuals, cultures and histories.  The recent grand jury findings in Philadelphia and elsewhere show that the church still has many problems and some deranged nuns and priests betrayed their positions and caused irreparable harm to thousands.  You should look into the findings of the Philadelphia grand jury.  The acts were horrific and the coverup shameful.

Islamic fundamentalists are lunatics and they are distorting their religion while hard at work trying destroy us.  They did it before, they're doing it now and if they have their way they'll keep on doing it.  I choose not to feel neutral about their symbols.  I recognize there are good Islamists but I have a visceral reaction to the nutcases that are causing so much death and fear in the world.  I experienced it first hand on 9/11/2001.

The Honors Course in Chattanooga has a very simple trophy for a logo which is very nice. Merion in my book is still the best.

The logo ball I have from Maidstone has a coat of arms like shield.  But the club shirts have this cool looking whale and the founding year - I think its 1891 or thereabout.  The ball logo is good - but I love the whale.  Seems to be a case of logo confusion.

Merion

I also think that Pine Valley as well, it is simple, and no matter where I am on a golf course, when I see it, I know exactly what golf club is, whether it is on a hat, shirt, or bag.

Recently, I have liked Whistling Straits.

I agree that some of the logos that do not have text in them seem to stick out more.

JD, when Peter and I were there last week they had both.  Kind of like Plainfield, they had two logos that seemed to get equal billing in the pro shop.  I actually like both a lot, but the whale logo seemed to fit the place better.

Actually, Dan, I thought the "whale" was only for my benefit, as you could have easily harpooned me with a sawed-off 5-iron that day, the way I mucked up the course...

Now that i think of it, I should propose to Peter, Clint and Arnold that they change the logo of Pebble Beach to a rabbit!!! ;) ;)
