If the tees on #18 were moved to the left, would the hole have a similar set of strategies as #1 at Sand Hills?  That picture seems to look similar in terms of the diagonal bunker off the tee, the left-hand bunker near the green, the hollow to the right and right-hand green side bunker.

Actually the 18th reminded me a bit of the 4th at Pine Valley ... you drive over a ridge (though not nearly as up-and-over as the Pine Valley hole) and down a slope which runs to the right, hopefully getting to the bottom and still short of an interrupted fairway.  The green was not as interesting as PV #4, but few are.

I also liked the first hole, but the second was one of my least favorites on the course ... nasty bunkers right in the landing area which were hard to judge, and a fairly steep uphill second to a tough green surface you can't see from the fairway.

Steve C:  Old Sandwich is still quite young, and I may like it more in a year or two after the roughs mature and naturalize.  For the time being, I'd rather play Sand Hills or Friars Head or Kapalua or Bandon Trails.  All of them are terrific courses; all I'm saying is that people who are putting Old Sandwich in Coore & Crenshaw's top three are maybe not giving their other work its due.

Played the course yesterday. I am a bit surprised that some are apparently not as impressed with it as I was. Great piece of land, sometimes reminiscent of heathland England or Australia. All the C&C hallmarks are present: variety, width, strategy, interesting green complexes. Haven't played Trails yet, but its certainly my #3 C/C course right now. A Doak 8 easily and probably a 9 when the greens mature a bit.
