Augusta Country Club
« on: September 26, 2005, 09:43:59 AM »
Curious to know if anyone knows any details on the recent restoration at Augusta County Club.  I am not even sure who gets the original design credit but I know that Raynor did a restore in 1926 and Ross in 1927.  I also have read that Ross was hired by the club for a period of time to help conduct club affairs.

Who did the restoration?  What was done?  By looking at the aerials the course looks more like a Ryanor than Ross.  Thanks

I spoke to a friend who is a member there.

Apparently Ross re-did the greens in 1926/27 changing them from sand to grass.

The recent revision done within the past three or four years expanded the size of the greens and has made scoring somewhat easier.

Travis did a renovation/remodeling in 1924 per Bob Labbance's book. Ross was there in 1927 from the D Ross Society website. Brian Silva has done some recent work.

Thanks Bob.  Through the years I have always heard Ross's name associated with this course.  If all he did was change the greens from sand to grass, I would think his involvement would be fairly minimal.  The course looks like a Raynor with the shapes of bunkers and greens.  Hopefully I will get down there in the next few weeks and take a look.  Thanks.

My understanding is that Ross did more than redo greens at ACC. I have the ACC history at home and will check.

There were originally two 18's at ACC. Both were first laid out by local amateurs. Raynor is credited with redoing one and Ross the other, both in the early 20's. Both were pretty much complete rebuilds. The Raynor 18 did not survive the Great Depression. (It was basically behind Butler Cabin and to the left of the 10th fairway at ANGC.)

Silva did a Ross "restoration" there about five years ago. If the ACC course now gives off hints of Raynor, I suspect that is mostly, if not all, Silva's doing.

Yes I knew that there were 2 18's but did not know which was which.  You are probably correct abou the Raynor characteristics.  Thanks for the info Bob.

I was there in 2003 and very much enjoyed as much of the course as I was able to see. Here is a shot of a green side bunker, I think on the second? I really wanted to get some shots of the punchbowl green and a couple of the other more well known holes but ran out of light.

My host had a copy set of Ross' original drawings of the course.
Here's one of them. The 16th with the punchbowl green.
