11th Hole at Pinehurst No. 1-A Ross Redan?
« on: September 26, 2005, 09:23:30 PM »
Even though it doesn't get mentioned on here, there's a lot of fun on the No. 1 Course at Pinehurst. I was thinking about redans when it popped into my head today that this hole, at 223 yards, is something of a super redan.  It's been ten years or so since I last played it and at that time I was familiar with the word but not the concept of the redan hole.  As I recall it,  the green was hidden from the tee, sat an angle similar to a redan and was canted to run away to the left.  There was also a trap short and left.  Anyone else recollect this hole.  I recall it being a brute--I had to hit driver to try and reach the green.  Of course I never played it in the summer when it might have been firm and fast.

Good call, Steve.  Although any resemblance to North Berwick or any of the MacDonald/Raynors is purely coincidental --- the Ross "Redan" is all natural slope, a natural hillside that throws the ball right to left, while all the others are manufactured.

Well maybe the North Berwick was natural but certainly none of the others were.  At any of the others, a ball hit too far right is gone.  At Pinehurst #1's 11th, anything right is kicked off that hillside, right?

I also enjoyed #1, except for the first hole which was pretty much a path to the 2nd tee.

Took me a while to figure out what you meant here.  The hillside acts as a backboard or safety net allowing you to pitch or chip down the length of the green as opposed to a true redan where the ball keeps on going until gravity ceases to be a factor.

So I guess this hole is redanish rather than a redan.

"Redanish" is right..... But really fun to play like a number of holes on #1.  I found it to be an entertaining layout and easy to walk, too bad it gets overlooked.
