trip info
« on: September 25, 2005, 01:37:30 PM »
I have been thinking of taking a trip out east with my dad and brother. My brother lives outside of Atlanta and I was wondering what you all think would be a better choice, Hilton Head or Kiawah.  My brother is about a 20 and my dad plays to about a traveling 15.  I want to relatively close to where my brother is.  Any other suggestions or places from you all would be greatly appreciated.  Are these courses enjoyable in the winter?  I am not entirely sure when we will go.  A couple of circumstances will dictate.  I want it to be very special as it could be the only time we have this chance.  Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Lance:
My preference would be Hilton Head.  There are many courses there that are fun for all and In Hilton Head there is quite a bit to do after golf.
The weather in winter is hit or miss.  It can be nice but at times can be cold.  For the most part the weather is at least playable.
Best

Thanks

Kiawhe Island is pretty good:  the Ocean course, of course, a Fazio, a Player which was better than I expected, a Nicklaus - which I liked the least of the 4- and another I didn't play
199 played, only Augusta National left to play!

It's really pretty hard to beat Cuscowilla.  Very good golf course, nice cottages to stay in, good roadhouse in town.  Golf package includes room, green fee, and caddy.  Don't take carts, cart path only (see concurrent thread!).

And it's only an hour and 20 minutes east of Atlanta.

For a change of pace there, I think maybe Mike Young's nearby Madison Lakes is about to or has opened.

Lance:

No question -- Kiawah.

Why?

When you have the greatness of Charleston -- one of America's most special places -- no more than 30-40 minutes away it is simply an elegant destination to sample so much of the South's history from a city that has not jettisoned its enitre heritage for a series of strip malls and big box stores.

Kiawah is a first rate facility and sampling The Ocean Course is clearly a "must play" for any passionate golfer.

IMHO, you won't be dissapointed.

Lake Oconee and Cuscowilla are hard to beat in the Fall and rates are very reasonable.  If you're at the Lake, try to arrange a round at Athens CC (45 minutes from Cuscowilla) I believe they are a reciprocal private club.  The South and East nines are great Ross and should be seen if you're playing Cuscowilla.

Thanks for the opinions.  Besides the ones I know are there, Harbor Town, Long Cove Club, and Chechessee (sp) what other courses are there to play around Hilton Head?  In the Charleston area what others worth playing are there besides the ones at Kiawah?  I really appreciate the help.

One thing I forgot.  Is the area around Lake Oconee worth the effort?  I'm thinking of Reynolds Plantation and of course Cuscowilla.  Could I make a week of this area and sample some outstanding courses?
