Lawsonia Links and Woodlands
« on: September 20, 2005, 07:19:03 PM »
I will be in this area for a couple of days late next week. Should I play both courses? What might be smart choices within a reasonable radius that would exclude the Kohler area?  I don't mean to be rude in excluding Kohler; two Springs ago, late March, my golf partner and I played Montrose for 18 pounds, and up the road Cruden Bay, for 35, alters one's perspective ehh?   PW;)

Paul, The original course is most worthy, not sure what they are charging, but at any cost it is a must see for any serious student of GCA/History. The Woodlands course is fun with some solid samplings of woodland golf. A great Quarry hole and drop shot are the highlights. There is even one hole which looks lunar in it's inspiration. But if you had to choose to play just one, it has to be the original Langford and Moreau design.
Have Dinner at Nortons. by the lake and please report back here with your impressions.

Also, nearby is (or was) a course called Muscootin. Personally, I have an affinity for the place since I golfed 63 holes there one day, while stopping for an hour and half lunch, and we quit two hours before dark.

the Links course is definately worth playing.

me, I'd play the Links course twice and take a drive around the Woodlands.  it would be time better spent this way.

Paul, you seem to appreciate a good value.  I'd recommend you plan to play the old links course by Langford and Morreau at Lawsonia at the twilight rate.  I believe the $35 walking rate starts at 2 or 2:30, which is plenty of time to enjoy the lovely course that exists there.

Here in Wisconsin, there are many great fall values.  What other type of courses are you looking for?  Do you want to see something newer and longer for challenge (either low cost or high end), or something sort old and funky and on the less expensive side?

While in the area some of you'all might want to stop into Ripon Wisc. The home of the Republican Party. 1856 I think ...and who was their first canidate?

Adam, Paul and RJ,  Thank you for your information.  I do prefer older municipal courses that can both charm and challenge; my current game would not lead me to new, longer venues.  I am touring Frank LLoyd Wright's Taliesin, west of Madison and I realize University Ridge, (Andy North's?), is on the way as well.  I am familiar with the Kenosha Racine area's public courses, Brighton Dale is a good one, but I am certain to play Lawsonia at $23 for walking eighteen.  PW

Play the Links course twice and look at the Woodlands through the trees as you're going around.  The Links deserves more than one look.

University Ridge is RTJjr.  RTJsr course, The SPrings at Spring GReen is just down the road from Taliesen East, near city of Spring Green.  It is beautiful out there in fall.
