Tobacco Road: It doesn't get any better than this
« on: October 01, 2005, 07:34:05 PM »
Bette and I played Tobacco Road today and thought it was great, wonderful, terrific, just plain awesume.

How this course is not in everyones top 100 lists is way beyond my limited mind's ability to understand.

It has definitely made my top 20 without a shadow of a doubt.

I'd light to hear how others view Tobacco Road
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

Did you try a search on "Tobacco"?
You'll find a lot of previous discussions and opinions.
Cheers

Agreed.  Laura and I played TR during our drive down to The Masters (practice round) this spring.   There was a 15-20 MPH wind, we were stuck behind an outing, and it was about 55 degrees, but we LOVED it.

The thing that makes me sad is that we'll never get to see what Mr. Strantz would have come up with in his later years.  Golf lost a giant with his passing.

I got to play it for the first time about 10 days ago, great great fun

Dan -- your thoughts about Mike:  I said basically the same thing to someone else the other day.   Life certainly isn't fair sometimes, to say the least :(
199 played, only Augusta National left to play!

Cary, no architect's work polarizes golfers - and raters - more than Strantz's. Far more so than with Pete Dye, people either love or hate his creations - sometimes both.

Caledonia G&FC in SC is the only one of his that's a consensus thumb's up, all the others generate some deep antagonism somewhere. It's fascinating to observe and I can document that with rater results.

Having said that, some of his courses are generally far more negatively received (Legends at Stonehouse, Tot Hill Farm). Tobaccao Road is the one the splits 50/50 the most heavily. I can see why some hate the roller coaster effect of his holes, though I'm one who happens to love it.
