Public courses around Asheville, NC
« on: September 13, 2005, 08:37:18 PM »
My father is working on project related to golf community living for retirees.  He is traveling to the Asheville, NC area next week.  He's definitely playing Champion Hills, and he's trying to get on Mountain Air and Kenmure.  However, he won't be able to play The Cliffs at Walnut Cove.  If all else fails, he's looking to play a couple of the public courses in that vicinity.  Are there any that are worthy of especially high praise?  Are there any other golf communities worth looking at?

Thanks.

Biltmore Forest GC, just south of Asheville, is a lovely old Ross course that's a private club in a real estate setting.

For pure public golf, you could not possibly do better than Grove Park Inn near downtown Asheville.

Another vote for the Grove Park...  While at it, have lunch at the Grove Park Inn's Sunset Terrace and drinks in the Great Hall/Lobby (but arrive early this time of year).  One of the special places anywhere!

Mt Mitchell is 30 minutes up the parkway.Definitely worth the trip. There is some construction on the parkway, but I think it is north of Mt Mitchell.Mountain Air is a beautiful place but the terain is severe.
