Sands Point (Tillinghast) near Plandome NY
« on: September 15, 2005, 03:31:40 PM »
This is A fine  course  with about 5 holes where approaches
cross  nice ravines. There are some nice  greens and some very solid restored bunkers that play like true hazards.
Also #14 is   a great  long par five over  tumbling land.

any thoughts  ?

Mark, how much of the course is original? Is it still basically as it was, or has it been remodelled beyond recognition?

Andy its my understanding that around 14-15 holes remain by
Tillinghast. The others fit in pretty well.
Ron  Forse and George  Bahto, two excellent architects, have worked there so they may have more definitive information

In America's Linksland (pages 131-132), it says 'many of the  Tillinghast features of that course were covered over during a Robert Trent Jones renovation of the course. These were restored during the 1990s; many Tillinghast bunkers were "located" via old aerial maps, then excavated.'  Cool  :)
