Any sleepers near Dublin?
« on: September 05, 2005, 07:13:38 PM »
If one happened to have a Saturday afternoon available to play in and around Dublin and was looking for a sleeper, where would one play. Royal Dublin is closed to outside play, and we're already lined up for the Island and Portmarnock. Any suggestions? Or would one forget about the extra round and hang in Dublin?
Thanks in advance....

The Montgomerie Course at Carton House.  Yes I know it is not an 80 year old links course, but if you want to play one of the best new ones near Dublin, this is it by a long shot.  I can make arrangements if you'd like.

What about the European Club, on Brittas Bay, south of Dublin? I am not sure how long it takes to get there from central Dublin. My guess is it might take 45-60 minutes, but I could be wrong about that.

I'd second the Montgomerie course at Carton House. From Dublin its also only about 30-40 minutes to County Louth Golf Club, aka Baltray.

I would choose Baltray(County Louth) over The European Club.  This is in now way to denigrate The European Club just that I found Baltray a more enjoyable experience.

Baltray is what I would consider a more traditional links and offers one of the best short par 4's I have encountered.

I can't comment on Carton House.

Having been there in July and played both Baltray and the European Club, I would second the nomination of Baltray.  It is a wonderful links course and a good deal easier drive if you are staying north of Dublin.  My recollection is that Baltray is about 40 minutes from Portmarnock whereas the European Club is a couple of hours away to the south.

GCA needs you to play Dun Laoghaire  GC about 5 miles south of the city centre.  It's a Colt course that developers have bought and this will be your last chance to play it.  We need photo's!!!!!!!!   Jack Marr said it was a fun course to play if a little flat.

It's close enough to to Dublin to leave time for non golf events or you could visit Dalkey and Sandycombe and see Joyce's Martello Tower. (Dalkey is also where the rock stars and F1 drivers live and is known locally as Belle Eire).
Let's make GCA grate again!
