Atlantic City/Southern New Jersey should be on the list. There are a great variety of public/private options for golf along with casino`s, first rate dining and world class beaches. Additionally you have proximity to NYC and Philly as well as other first rate destinations on the mid atlantic coast. Granted you won`t be in your bathing suit year round but you will get the change of seasons and a break from the southern heat.

Having lived in both Chattanooga and Athens, Ga- I could retire to either one in a heartbeat. Both are fabulous places. Chattanooga has Rock City and Ruby Falls,  Athens has Allens and the 40 Watt Club  ;)

Although the golf options are slightly better in TN.

And there's better dental care nearby.

Summers in the Hamptons,  Winter in Cabo for the 1%ers.  Traverse City for the rest of us....

A few Canadians have recently smartened up to the fact that NZ is absolute paradise for the retired golfer.  As Tom D. stated in a previous post you simply can't move here but you can simply come and stay for 6 month stints.  So more than a few Canadians have started to rent beach houses here in Paraparaumu and stay for 3-4 months over the Northern winter/Southern summer where you can buy a summer membership for something like $500 and play golf every single day.

There are dozens of wonderful communities all around NZ that have lovely courses and near perfect weather and nearly all offer summer memberships.  Why any North American would pick Arizona or Florida, etc. over NZ is beyond me.

This taken from my backyard just a couple of minutes ago, Paraparaumu's 8th green with majestic Kapiti Island in the background...

Scott,

How does one go about moving there full time.  Can one open a business there and hire a local and get some type of semi-permanent work visa?

Check out http://www.immigration.govt.nz/ as it's all pretty much laid out there.  They have investment categories for business owners and a points system for individuals.  Generally the younger and more educated/skilled you are, the easier it is on an individual basis.

Chris, does Allen's still have the dumb waiter to send the beer downstairs to the cellar?!   I spent a happy six months at the Navy Supply Corps School on Prince Avenue, crawling distance from Allen,s, great bar.

Bill,

Sadly, Allens in their orig location on Prince closed about 10 years ago...but recently reopened a few miles away on Hawthorne...I haven't been to the new one but I can't imagine it having the same "charm".  ;)

Sadder still, the Supply Corps School that had been there since the 50's closed for good last year (BRAC'd) and is now located in Newport RI.

When were you there?

I was a student there in 81 and was on staff for 2 wonderful years from 84-86...I miss Athens a lot!
