Paa Ko Ridge's new bunker pics
« on: August 22, 2005, 07:32:41 PM »
As an overview;

From a little closer;

Now a bit better (I hope)

And even a little closer?

I will offer up this: The Muirfield had too much, you know what, for this Johnson. And would need not be marked Store High In Transit.

Comments? Questions?

They look much better with the cloudy sky. Seems like its overall protection for the par 3 green. Could have extended the native area on the left to the massive bunker and achieved the same result.

Adam:

I think it would be helpful to point out that Rob the greens supt. at Paa-Ko actually took the design drawings of Ken Dye and went forward solo.

Personally, I think some of the new bunkers on the 3rd nine are a bit of overkill. The great thing about Paa-Ko is the land and it doesn't need a lot of extra goings-on in order for it to excel. The par-5 you pictured on the 3rd nine is a good hole but I think it's overly cluttered with just too many bunkers that will only serve to hit on the higher handicap player.

Peter, The native is beautifully textured and makes for great use as a centerline nasty. However, this is public for profit golf, with look and playability in high priority. The centerline nature of the existing bunkers is a step in the right direction, causing the mediocre golfer an opportunity to actually strategize over their playing of a golf hole. I doubt Matt is correct that the higher handicapper will find the left bunkers for the simple reason that even with a busted drive, the need to be right will not only be paramount, but likely inevitable. This is a hole that most players will have a need to manage. Something completely different than just down the middle.

And as Matt mentioned, Rob (a former CME guy) did do a better than fantastic job, as in-house jobs usually go. The only criticism I could make was in relation to the green shapes on the one shotters. I felt the first, should've been more angled from front right to back left. Keeeping with a more Redan tradition, and providing some variety. But that's just me.
