"The Pledge"
« on: August 17, 2005, 01:19:07 PM »
When my parents grew up in rural Ireland it was common for teenagers, at the urging of the local pastor, to take "the pledge" that they would not drink until they reached maturity.

Here is a thread where I invite any and all GCAers (except the small number who have already violated the pledge*) to refrain from posting about the newest Golf Magazine rankings.  If there is any pursuit in golf course arch that I abhor more than continuous cart paths, it is magazine rankings and all variations of posts about them.

I hereby take the pledge.

* those who have already violated the pledge can get one mulligan and promise not to do it again.   :)

I hereby take the pledge ...

And I will also refrain from using a range finder or caddie ...

SCREW THAT!  DON'T DO IT!

Ran needs to take his lumps like us poor beleaguered GD guys did when our ratings came out, and the GW brethren did to a lesser extent when theirs did.  I want my pound of flesh, dammit!

I steadfastly refuse to pledge.

That being said, I have yet to post about it - the list looks decent enough to me.

Kevin:

I think I share your disdain for cart paths. BUT, the thing I "abhor" most is someone telling me what its o.k. to think about, talk about, comment on, like, or dislike. I happen to like lists. I collect lists of all sorts of thinks. I'll read them, think about them, and discuss them whenever I damned well please.

Reminds me of the story of the guy who went to his doctor and was told that he had to give up half his sex life. He asked, "Which half, thinking about it or talking about it?".

Go ahead and post all you like about the lists...the pledge is perfectly voluntary, so if you want to discuss the merits of a #23 ranking versus #43 or even #73, don't let this thread stand in your way.

The pledge applies to past, present and future lists, unless revoked by the pledger.   :)

As Mr. Huckaby works for YAHOO (Yet Another Hierarchical Officious Oracle), I feel a need to support his livelihood so that he can continue to support his family and make his grand golf trips.

I will not pledge!

Kevin, just curious.  What is the age of maturity in rural Ireland...and how many of those who took the pledge actually lived up to it?

Kevin,

I have mentioned this before, but some old biddy from the Ladies Christian Temperence Union approached Harry Vardon to sign the pledge against the consumption of vile and noxious liquors. The great man straightened up and responded quite vociferously, " Maam, I have never been beaten by a teetotaller and see no reason to change my habits."
