ST. Andrews

I saw a new set of courses being part of a new hotel/resort opened just outside of St. Andrews last year. I walked a few holes of one of them which appeared to be not much more than a holiday course. I think Devlin and or Torrance was noted as the design team. I played with a few friends from New Orleans last weekend who said only one of them was open and it was great. I was amazed to hear this. Has anyone played it or them and what is the general opinion?

John, is it possible they were talking about Kingsbarns?

I believe John Bernhardt is talking about the St. Andrews Bay resort, which is defintely not related to Kingsbarns. I cannot recall whether there have been postings about either of the St. Andrews Bay courses already on this site

The courses being refrerred to are the Torrance course and the Devlin course.  The Devlin being the course that has received more praise than the other.

Neither of these courses should be confused with Kingsbarns.  These two are nearer St. Andrews just a few miles from Kingsbarns.

Bunkers, if they be good bunkers, and bunkers of strong character, refuse to be disregarded, and insist on asserting themselves; they do not mind being avoided, but they decline to be ignored - John Low Concerning Golf

See this link to a discussion of the two courses focusing on the real architect, Denis Griffiths:

Devlin, Torrance?  Griffiths has been at this a very long time and has produced some very good courses.  The St. Andrews work should be providing him with much of the same acclaim that is afforded the Parsinen/Phillips team at Kingsbarns.

Not to make a comparison to the relative design merits, only to suggest that this is simply another example of credit NOT being given where credit is due.  Be it good, bad or indifferent.

I agree that proper cridit should be given. This site generally reflects those values too. Has anyone actually played these courses. The few holes I walked did not appear strong at all.
