Golf's Mass Extinctions
« on: August 12, 2005, 07:40:48 PM »
Looking back on the history of golf courses, it seems that the game goes through periods of time where "mass" extinctions occur with golf courses.

Like a biological mass extinction, golf mass extinctions tend to mark the end of a design era and the ushering in of a new one.

Some eras I can think of:

The late teens: Old courses at Aronimink, Merion, Philly Cricket, Huntingdon Valley (not sure what else outside the Philly area, Lido?)

The depression: Can't think of any NLEs, but a lot of courses had to cut back maintenance budgets therefore changing a lot of fundamental aspects.

Now: Can only think of Blue Heron Pines East specifically, but it would seem a lot of courses are being plowed under for housing.

Any additions to any of these eras?

There's an interesting Web site dedicated to rediscovering "abandoned" New England ski areas (http://www.nelsap.org/). If the golf market is as saturated as some think, with supply outstripping demand, we might one day find a similar site focused on lost golf courses.

Does anyone has the current numbers and future projections on new course opening and existing course closing?
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

Cary:

According to NGF through 8-11, for 18 hole facilities.  Does not include re-construction.

Proposed Facilities,  183
In Planning,  359
Under Construciton, 283
Completed, 65

Business is good, up-cycle continues, for now.

I think there are a few more courses in Michigan.  Somebody mentioned a few months back about two (I think) shutdowns in northwest Michigan.  Also, I think either the Links of Novi or Tanglewood has closed for housing.

Ciao
