Yes, but what about the golf course he designed/helped design there - Thundering Waters Golf Club?

It is supposed to be a stop on the Canadian Tour. Promoting the golf course was the reason for the stunt.

The report I saw said it was a 360-yard carry.

There was one drive that John just RIPPED - and he stopped and pleaded with someone to tell him that that one made it since he had hit it so good.

Didn't make it, though.

Perhaps JD should have done what most of us have had to do- move up to the next set of tees.

When I was younger, we used to play Whirpool (S. Thompson).  When we came to 18 tee, we crossed the street and tried to hit a ball across the Niagara gorge.  Obviously, nobody ever made it past halfway, but it was fun watching the balls fly to their doom...

Dan Hermann,

Thanks for bringing back warm memories of Whirlpool GC.

Unfortunately, it remains the only Stanley Thompson course I've played to date.

Don't worry.  At this pace, in a couple years he can knock it over with a 5-iron!

I'm not sure if I'm amazed that Daly won two majors or the fact that he won ONLY 2 majors ???

one of the most confounding individuals in golf history..the same number of majors as Greg Norman, 1 more than Love, COuples, MICKELSON!!!!!!, etc

Can you imagine John Daly, with his incredible power and deft touch, combined with Jack Nicklaus's brain and discipline?

Jack, even in his prime, was not very good with less than full shots and could be an ugly chipper and pitcher of the ball.

Why...you'd have...Tiger Woods!  ;)

I think it would have been way cooler if Daly had gone over the Falls in a barrel!  Maybe one with the Loco logo on the side?

Craig,

Precisely my idea in the post above.  If nothing else, JD has proven to be nearly indestructable, no matter how hard and how many times he's tried.  He needs no barrel, but maybe a motorcycle helmet and full wetsuit so that he can sell lots of logo space.  I wonder which outcome would make that helmet more valuable on eBay.

I love Daly! And you're right, a helmet and a wet suit is all he needs! Lots of logo's...maybe some boating and fishing equipment sponsors could get onboard (no pun intended)!!

I'm trying to picture all 260 pounds of John Daly in a tight-fitting wetsuit and the thought of it makes me shiver.

Paul,

I'm in a bit of the same boat. I guess we all like to see someone we consider an underdog do well but given his degree of talent I'm not sure his self-destructiveness qualifies him for underdog status.

I know it makes me nervous to watch him because he acts so squirrely. On the plus side, he takes a good rip at the ball and he plays fast so he's got those admirable qualities no matter what.

He's no Ben Crane.

And that's a GOOD thing.

Voytek -- I know WHY he is -- that  "everyman" appeal, etc. -- but as Brent alluded to John is kind of a knucklehead in certain ways....I don't root against him, I do remember pulling for him  when he won in San Diego a few years back, but the almost "over the top" support he seems to get :  that I don't get

and kudos to him for playing fast!

I have got to believe there's a small measure of pressure playing golf for a living. So when you see someone like Daly bent over shaking, crying, dealing with his demons, while trying to make a living, I think it perks your interest in the guy.

I was reading a long interview with him at the ESPN web site...it might actually have been a golf digest interview or something that was linked to ESPN....reading that interview, and he's very candid in it, certainly gave me even more reason to respect the guy.

There are very modern day golfer that we actual know. Nobody knows Phil or Tiger or Vijay....they aren't about to let you peek over that wall they have constructed around their lives. But Daly? He's all about being open. I think that is in large measure his appeal to the average guy. He seems human.
