Spring trip destinations

I'm thinking of organizing a 10-year reunion of my college golf team at some point next spring (maybe in March) over a long weekend. We're all single-digit handicappers and have a taste for good golf courses, although those tastes are widely varied; we're all young enough that we don't have *too* much money to spend; ideally, I think we'd like to plop ourselves down in one place and not do any real traveling during our stay, although having a couple of different golf courses to play would be a bonus; good weather would also be appreciated.

Within those parameters, any suggestions on where we might go? I'm keen on going to Bandon (three great courses, reasonably priced at that time of year), but I fear that getting there might involve a bit too much travel for some of us - not all of us are so keen on great GCA taking precedence! - and the weather in March sounds a bit iffy, so I'm looking for possible alternatives. Arizona (Scottsdale or Tuscon), Pinehurst and Kiawah are other suggestions which have been offered, but I'm not sure any of them hugely tickles my fancy. Any others I might propose?

Cheers,
Darren

You could make a nice trip to myrtle beach..
1. Golf courses: Playing Caledonia, True Blue, Tidewater, Dunes, Heathland, you have a full weekend.
2. Plenty of stuff for the family to do on the strip + the beach and history in the area.

Arizona would be tough in march on any kind of budget...Pinehurst is my choice - did it three times with my college team and loved it every time.

Ideas that were thrown out in my college team trip planning days included -

World Woods in FL
Gulf Shores, Alabama
Arizona
San Diego

Ocala area

Darren:

Believe it or not, a trip to the Ocala area affords some of the best daily fee stuff in the Southeast.  Weather at that time is good.

* Pine Barrens at World Woods
* Rolling Oaks at World Woods
* El Diablo
* The Dunes at Seville
* Golden Hills

If you can access private courses...

* Golden Ocala
* Black Diamond Ranch
* CC of Ocala

The Dunes and Golden Hills are sleepers.  Both excellent.  El Diablo deservedly won a Best New award.

The only drawback to this trip is that it doesn't allow for a lot of other activities.  Depends on how important the non-golf agenda is.

The weather in the Southeast can be highly variable in March, even in Georgia or the Carolinas.  The Bermuda will be dormant, too, even as far as south Georgia.

I would suggest Florida.  I think March is the best weather month in Florida - warm, sunny days, cool nights, not much humidity.  The courses are generally in very good condition.

I go with a group of 16 every March to Orlando.  We book through Golfpactravel.com - it's generally pretty inexpensive, and there are a lot of options for accommodations and type/level of courses to play.

Although the weather is risky in March, Williamsburg, VA, has an incredible variety of courses that are very reasonably priced. I went with friends last March and had sunny skies, 65 degree temperatures, and the courses to ourselves. Gave me my first taste of Strantz designs at Royal New Kent and Stonehouse—which made the trip worthwhile even if it had rained each day.

If you can go the last weekend of march through mid April, I'd suggest Mid-Pines/Pine Needles. Great courses, great food, great service, great value. And lots off great off-site golf options for the second 18.
