The Am. qualifier has been at Camargo for many years. IN recent times the site has been over-subscribed, so the Cinci. Golf Association changed from the Camargo / Terrace Park format to two separate qualifiers, Camargo and the Traditions GC in No. Kentucky.
Camargo is a very private club and hosts very few outside events. The Am. qualifier has always been its "give back."
The Camargo qualifier has, in recent years, been scheduled (conincidentally) during a one-week "break" in the amateur golf tournamnent "circuit." Thus, many fine players on their way to/from the North and South, the Eastern, the Sunnehanna, etc. have made Camargo their Am. qualifying choice. Particularly, a large contingent of Australians seem to have made it their stop. Two years ago eventual Am. champ Nick Flanagan qualified out of Camargo.
This year, due to the Open at Pinehurst, the North and South dates were moved. Thus, Camargo did not have the large contingent of 'outsiders." The field was only 54 players. Therefore, scores were higher than in recent years.
There is talk about moving the date a week earlier next year.
Camargo is terrific and everyone should get to play there once. What better time than in the US Amateur qualifier? Hope to see you there next year.
