Which Archie's Style blends the following?
« on: August 02, 2005, 01:17:14 PM »
The New England Bunker style of Donald Ross
Pete Dye's lines and Angles
Seth Raynor's geometric green complexes

all in a new style sashimi (my word--thank you Nobu) that is labeled Contemporary Old School..

A client told me about this course today and then when I read something about it, this archie's style was described as the above.

I know Ran is a fan of his.

Gotta be Brian Silva all the way. Although I know he's a huge Raynor fan, I don't think he uses the geometric green complexes that much. He definetly uses the steep fall of bunkers of Raynor (and Banks).

I have not seen much of Brian's independent work, but the photos I've seen of his bunkers look more like Raynor bunkers than like Ross bunkers, and it is a mistake to say they are both similar just because the faces are grass.

And, a lot of Pete Dye's angles come from his love of Raynor and Macdonald's work.

So, I'm not sure the blend described is really that unusual.

Tom Doak, et all-- from your esteemed colleague Mr. Whitten in GD..

The Massachusetts Black Rock was designed by Brian Silva, using his now-familiar style that blends the New England bunker style of Donald Ross with the geometric green complexes of Seth Raynor and the lines-and-angles strategies of Pete Dye to create what I call a fully contemporary Old School golf design. Brian was given a promising, if challenging, site – the old Margetts Quarry - and made the most of it.
