Nebraska Amateur at Omaha CC
« on: July 27, 2005, 03:41:26 PM »
Kyle's post reminded me to post a link about the Amateur here in Nebraska at Omaha Country Club. This is the Centennial Amateur in Nebraska and on Monday the Nebraska Golf Association sponsored a Hickory Golf outing at the Field Club of Omaha (site of the 1941 US Amateur).

Play at Omaha CC started yesterday with only one player breaking par of 71. OCC is only 6,460 yards but can obviously still hold its own. While OCC was founded in the late 1800s the current course was built in 1927 by Langford and Moreau and the greens were rebuilt by Perry Maxwell. Tillinghast was also rumored to make a visit in the 1930 as well.

Hey, I know Nebraska isn't a golf hot bed but I thought some of you may want to know about something other than Sand Hills, Wild Horse and Firethorn that had some "classical" elements!  ;D

If you are wondering the Nebraska Amateur is at stroke play (72 holes with low 36 and ties making the final two rounds) and we have a separate Match Play tournament that was contested at Wild Horse this year.

A link to OCC's aerial and routing is here:

Did Randy Jensen win the hickory tourney on his home turf?

Omaha Field Club is a perfect venue for such an event, chock full of history (Johnny Goodman was a member there and the last amateur to win The US Open) and the oldest course in Omaha.

Hurley is the one who will eventually carry the Husker State's banner to the 'big show', if he stays focused.  He can really go on some birdie runs.  Only a HS senior, he destroyed the Wild Horse course record.

The aerial and the one you can see on Google Maps seem to depict the same remodeled style in bunker placement that Happy Hollow (the other Langford course in O) has undergone.  I found it near impossible to identify any Langford at HHCC.  I suspect OCC is the same.
No actual golf rounds were ruined or delayed, nor golf rules broken, in the taking of any photographs that may be displayed by the above forum user.
