High course rating, low slope rating
« on: July 26, 2005, 12:55:40 PM »
Looking at Renaissance Golf's website again, I came across Tom D's essay on short grass as a hazard. In the essay, he mentions that there are few courses that are hard for the better golfer, but not so taxing for the average golfer. In USGA parlance, he adds, these are courses with high course ratings and relatively low slope ratings.

Can anyone offer some examples of such courses?

Pinehurst #2 75.3/135 from the Golds based on a 71 par with hole 8 as a 4. Gotta be a poster child for the comment.

Peter,
There are 115 courses in the US(GC.com) that have slopes of 120 or less with ratings of 72 or higher.

The number of courses with a slope of  120 or less with ratings of 70 or higher is 1,108.

Jim, what is the website you're referencing? I tried gc.com and it was an Israeli sports site.

The idea that a relatively low slope on a course with a high rating reflects a course less taxing for the higher handicapper misunderstands the system. There have been numerous explanations over the past several years here if one wants to look up past threads. It would be more accurate to say that such a course is only proportionally, rather than disproportionally, more brutal for the bogey player.

Further, speaking as a course rater (not ranker) slopes for back tees at courses with high ratings (for the scratch player by definition) are very suspect. I hate to do them because on many holes the bogey player can't reach the fairway and the system requires arbitrary fiddles to get a result. Our teams always comment that all isuch a rating tells the bogey player about the course is that he's playing the wrong tee.

Essentially, that was what MacK believed made TOC so special and what he and Jones tried to build at Augusta National.

It is a very, very small group of courses that - on the same day under the same conditions - can cause a scratch player to post one of his higher scores of the year and a bogey player to post one of his lowest.
