Compass Pointe??
« on: July 26, 2005, 02:48:57 PM »
Given the proximity to Washington DC and Baltimore, I'm surprised I've yet to hear anything here regarding the new 36 hole complex in Anne Arundel county called Compass Pointe, by Lindsay Ervin (formerly of Queenstown Harbor and a few others in the region).

Anyone been out there yet?  Thoughts?  Impressions?

Compass Pointe opened their fourth nine in early July. The construction dragged out for several years due to financial issues, wetland issues and permits (Big Surprise).

I have only played the North and South nines. They were opened a bit prematurely and the conditioning leaves a bit to be desired. The greens rolled well but were a bit grainy. The bent grass fairways have taken a beating and the sand fill mix does nothing to promote the growth of new bent grass.

Lindsay Ervin did a wonderful job with the shaping of several greens. Others did not provide sufficient depth for the required approach shot due to the angle of the greens. This was particularly evident on the par three holes.

The routing appears to have been compromised by wetlands and protected areas. The nine holes across the street from the clubhouse (North?) has several wide open holes near the road which provides distractions from the yahoos yelling FORE!

Mike, you will probably love it!

Rob,

If history's any indication, I most likely will!  ;D

(inside joke...Rob and I rarely agree on golf courses, which is ultimately fun)

By the way, are the Yahoos used strategically?  ;)

Absolutely. They yell during the tee shots on #1 and #3!

Any additional thoughts on this golf course now that it has been open longer? When I am in Baltimore, this course will be the closest to me and I am considering playing here in addition to playing the USNA course and possibly another one or two.

John,

I still can't speak for Compass Pointe as I haven't made it down there yet, but when you're up here I'd love to get over to USNA with you, and perhaps I can get you up to play CC the same weekend.

I played there back in 2006 when I was interning in Annapolis. If only I had known about GCA back then I could have played Beachtree!

As for Compass Pointe I wasn't as architecturally tuned in back then but from what I remember I enjoyed it, the course conditions were good (firm and greens rolling fast), and I remember thinking it was a good value. (~$40 iirc) There are some longer tee to green walks and I played on a cart as a single and flew around. I believe I played the N-S 18. I would give it a go.
Did you know World Woods has the best burger I've ever had in my entire life? I'm planning a trip back just for another one between rounds.

John,

As I mentioned offline, I'm a really big fan of Mount Pleasant Muni in town, especially if you can get out there during a weekeday.   I know Kyle Goalby is similarly impressed.
