The Digest / Golf Mag slippage ...

I read the latest issues of both magazines and I found it disturbing that a feature article on the quality courses that exist along historic Rte 66 didn't include BlackMesa in the Sante Fe area but saw fit to mention thelocal muini courseinthevicinity calledMartySanchez.

Did the writer fail to checkwith Digest files and see that Black Mesa was selected by Digest asanationalaward winner in the "best new affordable" catergory just a few seasons ago?

Then you have the laughable selections by Golf Magazine in itscurrent issue highlighting the upcoming PGA Championship at Baltusrol and they mentioned a few public courses worthy of a look. They mentioned Flanders Valley (Morris County) -- an above average 36-hole complex but then saw fit to include Francis Bryne and Ash Brook-- both muni's owned by Essex and Union counties respectively with the former in need of a major makeover and the latter an average course with some good holes.

Did the writer fail to understand that Morris has en even better layout in Sunset Valley which is considerably closer to Baltusrol -- or the wonderful combination of layouts you can play in Somerset -- no less than five (5). From the daily fee side you have the first rate complex at Crystal Springs -- no further away than Flanders Valley from the event.

I would hope both magazines would at least scan / fact check their items -- especially since visiting readers may take to heart their conclusions.

Matt, I'm not sure where the old route 66 runs, and it's proximity to Black Mesa. And, I'm not sure of the Jersey course, but perhaps the article was written for the 29 handicapper?

Now you go through Saint Louie; Joplin, Missouri; and Oklahoma City is mighty pretty. You see Amarillo; Gallup, New Mexico; Flagstaff, Arizona (don't forget Winona); Kingman, Barstow, San Bernandino...

I'll go you one further.

It now takes me five (5) minutes to 'read' (leaf) through Golf Digest and Golf.

No more time is needed anymore to get through these "fluff" magazines anymore.

When I'm done, I hand them to a co-worker (ex-subscriber) who goes through them in even less time.

 

Since my subscriptions run through abou 2009, I will keep scanning through them for now ....

   I with you on this one.. my GD subscription expired in May (after 10 years?) and my Golf subscription ends in a couple of months.  I also used to get Golf Tips and Golf World.

   Now its down to Golf Week and Links.

Wow, with no one reading either magazine any more, it's amazing the threads about the rankings take up so much room.  GOLF's are due out soon, too.

Matt, you're right that those two articles omitted some better courses, but those little "travel feature" articles near the back of the big magazines have never been particularly complete, in my experience.  They seem to be included almost as an afterthought.

  Good observation.  I thought the same thing; 'there are a lot more courses within a short drive of Baltusrol that would/should merit inclusion in the article'.  NJ has a lot to offer.

You may want to see the new Neshanic Valley layout in Somerset County -- I'm really surprised that the Golf Mag article didn't mention it. It's also the home of the new Callaway Testing Center.

The other courses you could visit along I-78 are also worthy of a mention but got no ink. Try Hawk's Pointe (soon to be private), Heron Glen in Hunterdon, The Architect's in Lopatcong Twsp and even better yet the stunning work of Kelly Blake Moran at Morgan Hill just on the other side of the Delaware in Pennsy.

I would think the "big two" golf mags would put a bit more effort in their travel recommendations. Clearly, those who have posted have indicated their own particular displeasure with what is stated within their pages.

Route 6 through ABQ. is Central Avenue. Basically, from Amarillo, TX to Flagstaff, AZ (at least) it is now I-40.

By that measure, even MArty Sanchez doesn't really fall along Route 66- you might include Paa-Ko, Los Alltos, Sunport, UNM South, and Ladera in ABQ, and whatever is still open in Grants.

Adam, Route 66 starts about 5 blocks dead east of me at Adams and Michigan Ave. and ends somewhere in Santa Monica.

It was originally a Par 47,591, but with technology, it's now just a simple par 42,826 for the Tour pros.

Is that just the longer distance the ball travels or does it also take into effect the fact that the ball is also straighter, adding to the chance of turbo "cart path" bounces off Rte 66?
