Bandon/Pacific Dunes Slope Ratings
« on: July 26, 2005, 07:54:24 PM »
This is something that has been puzzling me:

The slope rating from the Black (Back) Tees at Pacific is 133

The slope rating from the Gold (Senior) Tees at Bandon is 132

Can someone explain to me how this is possible? I understand that the course ratings are not close together like this, but isnt the slope rating the difficulty of the course for the bogey golfer?

Wouldnt this be saying then, that for the 18 handicapper, playing the Back tees at Pacific is equally as difficult as playing the Senior tees at Bandon (which of course cant be true)

Can this be? Or am I wrong in my understanding of Slope rating?

Thanks

I think that Bandon has been re-sloped (or there was an error on the card.)  When I visited in 2003 the greens were in the 140s and the golds were 132.  When I visted last month the greens are 132 or 133 and the golds are low 120s.

Evan - the bogey rating is the difficulty for the bogey golfer, not the slope.

Slope is just what you learned in 9th grade algebra:
              y = mx + b
where b=the slope of the line showing the relative difference of between the par and bogey rating.

You can see the details for PD here: http://www.usga.org/playing/handicaps/course_ratings/course_rating_results.asp?coid=PACIFIC+DUNES&coname=PACIFIC+DUNES&cocity=BANDON&costate=OR&MW=M

Here's the definition of bogey rating from www.ghin.com:
the one number every golfer worse than a scratch should check before deciding which tees to play. This rating is the evaluation of the playing difficulty of a course for the bogey golfer. It is based on yardage, effective playing length and other obstacles to the extent that affect the scoring ability of the bogey golfer. To figure out this number, other than from looking at this database, the bogey golfer should take the Slope Rating®, divide it by the set factor (5.381 for men, and 4.24 for women) and add that to the Course Rating. The result is a target score for the bogey golfer, and is a truer yardstick of the challenge that lies ahead for the particular set of tees. Example: 96.3- which predicts the bogey golfer's average of his ten best (out of twenty) scores would be approximately 96.3 from this particular set of tees.

Peter, agreed that it is now, but it most definitely was not on the scorecard in June 2003.

Just shows you how precise those Slope Ratings are.
