What trip would you take?
« on: July 25, 2005, 05:11:44 PM »
If you had a special event (like your 50th birthday) and had your choice of 2 trips, which would you take?

A.  A one week trip to Scotland.  St. Andrews, Cruden Bay, Dornoch, Kingsbarn, etc.

B. Play the Golf Digest top 10 in 1 week.  CPC, Pebble, Oakmont, Merion, PVGC, Winged Foot, Shinny, NGLA, ANGC & Seminole.

easy, B.

The A trip can be booked just about any time by any one.  Not so for B.

I wouldn't want to spend the week of my 50th birthday running around like my hair was on fire.  And, if your birthday isn't in September, October, April or May, playing all of the GOLF DIGEST top 10 is impossible anyway.

Joel,

Go with B).  Please consider this as an application to be your caddie and man-servant for the trip.

I'm still packed from my NY trip. Let's go for B, without a doubt. When do we leave?

B.

But this line-up for A would merit serious consideration:

North Berwick - 18 - Overnight Greywalls
H.C.G.C. - 36 - Overnight Greywalls
St. Andrews Old - 36 - Overnight Dunvegan
Carnoustie - 18/Royal Aberdeen 18 - Overnight in Aberdeen
Cruden Bay - 36 - Overnight at Skibo
Royal Dornoch - Carnegie Shield 4/5 Days
Gleneagles - Kings and Queens - Overnight at Gleneagles

Return.

Some more information.  I have been to Scotland about 20 years ago and want to return to play so many of the courses. I've never been to Prestwick, Troon, etc. really anything outside of St. Andrews.

As for the US top 10, I've played 7 of the 10.  Logistically I don't see it as much of a problem.  Play CPC & Pebble and then fly to Pittsburgh, drive to Philly and Pine Valley and then up to New York.   Fly down to Augusta and then fly to Palm Beach.  The travel doesn't bother me.

Doak, you're a kill joy and you didn't answer the question.   Obviously I would do it in the spring or fall, probably the fall because of the weather.

If I go to Scotland, I would play with the same group of people for a week.  If I do the top 10, I would have different freinds over the years meet me at the different courses.

Joel:

Personally, I would go for A.

I think B smacks of rampant ego ... playing any "list" does.

Hopefully you would make some new friends as well as old ones on either tour.

Joel,
I would do the Scotland version, particularly since you have seen 7 of the 10 here. North Berwick, Dornoch, Cruden Bay, Prestwick, & TOC alone are worth the trip. If you really want to get crazy pop over to Machrihanish, and down to Rye.
Head across the pond, you won't regret it. :)

I'd do a.  The top-10 trip would be too disjointed (golf-wise and travel-wise) for me compared to the Scotland trip.

Joel, I thought you asked if "you" had a special event.  You mean me or you? ;D

Oh crap, I already had that special event of 50.  I'm closing in on 60 and can only wish that if I could have one of those wishes, I'd still have the vigor and stamina to make the best of all that in a mere week or so.

But.... ::) if I could, I'd do the old sod tour.

Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

I'd choose A. If it weren't for CPC on the other list the choice wouldn't even be close. Just Dornoch and St. Andrews would fill 10 days, though. Can I stay over an extra week?

if you cannot do "b" -ie. access problems  - you might consider (as previously mentioned by messr Waldron) Northern and Southern Ireland - Royal County Down / Portrush / Lahinch / Portmarnock / Ballybunion to name a few - are pretty formidable and you can play a couple of London area courses on the way in and out - ie Sunningdale Old / Walton  Heath  Old / Swinley Forest /etc.

How about Royal Melbourne (both 18's), Commonwealth, Royal Adelaide, St. Andrew's Beach (both 18's), New South Wales, Moonah, Barnbougle Dunes, Cape Kidnappers and Kauri Cliffs??

What does it matter if the poor player can putt all the way from tee to green, provided that he has to zigzag so frequently that he takes six or seven putts to reach it?     --Alistair Mackenzie--

I'm with Gerry, those Irish courses have a magic ring to them.
I would stopover and go to Bandon. I'm traveling from New Zealand

Pretty sure he's talking about Muirfield, formally known as the Honourable Club of Edinburgh Golfers or something similar.

Thanks for the suggestions, I've considered them all including Australia.  I have the frequent flier miles to go anywhere so thats not a problem.

The top 10 idea was really stolen from Bob McCoy when he did his top 100 in the world in 100 days.  Since I don't have that much time, I thought a short version would be fun, possibly the Golf Magazine world top 10 but thought it would be a waste to go down under for 1 day.

I'm leaning on flying to London and play Swinley Forest, Rye, Royal St. George and The Grove.   Fly to Scotland to play Prestwick, Dornoch, Cruden Bay, Kingsbarn and one or two others.

I'm still open to suggestions. Thanks.

That's a lot of travel time in between rounds ...

if you are going the  the london -scotland route - then you should consider Sunningdale and Walton Heath on the way in or out - as they are are easily accessable  to Heathrow and Gatwick without having to travel into London.

Scotland -consider the following not on your list - TOC / Carnoustie / Machrihanish (have not played but those in the know tell me it is a must play)/ Muirfield / Gleneagles Kings Course as it is a great place to stay.

Fro Joel, I would play as many off B as time would allow for I can and do play the A list every few years. The B list is more of a challenge to put together. Yes Tom playing off a list takes much of it away. I would just pick a course a day of the hard to get on private clubs and be happy. For Me, I actually would go to Aussie land and NZ for a special event trip. I have not been there and would love to spend a month playing golf, drinking a few pints and enjoying the natural beauty and charm of the female population down under.
