Sir Michael Bonallack announced sometime around 2000 that Kingsbarns was "the last developable bit of..."etc, etc.

Was he playing the R&A off against the HCEG for a laugh?

This is the GLORIOUS bit of ground immediately to the North of Muirfield (that's the 5th and 11th Greens of Muirie below the letter I of Image) and a wee bit West of Archerfield which is the area I believe the HCEG have looked at previously. If this doesn't stir your GCA soul, please resign your membership forthwith!

What a fantastic 'out-and-in', with a loop at 8,9,10 and 11 at the Point, and playing along those hollows and over those ridges it would make!

FBD -- Who owns it, and why has it gone undeveloped all these centuries?

While at Muirfield this past visit I spied this land.  While chatting with a member after lunch, he stated that Muirfield has looked at this land for many years.  Nobody at the club has made a serious move on it because many felt the present course is underused.  He even stated that some were considering allowing ladies to join and building them a separate course and clubhouse on this land!  That'l be the day.

Muirfield owns the dunesland depicted.  For years it has been labeled SSSI (a Site of Special Scientific Interest) because of the morphology of the dunes and as a bird habitat, so they have not pursued developing it, but they are now exploring what it would take to get permits while the climate is seen as favorable.

The three fields in the bottom right of the picture, and all the trees adjacent to the dunesland (plus a bit of the dunes on the point), are the property where we have laid out the Renaissance Club at Archerfield.  Still awaiting final permissions to start building a golf course there, hopefully in the fall.  It's not nearly as dramatic as the piece Muirfield owns, but maybe I'll make a good impression!

That's amazing. To build a course cheek to jowl with NGLA and Shinnie is one thing.

Now you tell us you are going to go cheek to jowl with Muirfield and N. Berwick too?

One such opportunity in a lifetime is unbelievable. Two such opportunities may be messin' with the gods... ;)

Wow. Congratulations and go get 'em. That's high cotton. And a little frightening, I assume.

As long as you are going a little Google aerial crazy, see if you can bring up the coastline north of Dornoch/Embo around into the south shore of Loch Fleet. You will find a large amount of linksland there. You will also find a lot south of Golspie down to the north shore of Loch Fleet. A lot of that is not developable linksland however.

That is inspiring. I hope the lesser course under construction at Archerfierld does not hold back what appears to be 2 great opporunities for new courses that close to Edinburgh.
