How much irrigation (and when) at CPC?
« on: July 25, 2005, 02:22:27 PM »
The Google Earth (the BEST thing on the Web after GCA) coverage of CPC shows lots of 'Rainbird' activity.

Is this only a summer phenomenon? Is it very visible 'on the ground'?

Dumb question from someone who has never been there, but isn't the area right of the trees in the 17th fairway supposed to be fairway--the harder spot to get to but the easier approach if you can?

A quick survey with Google Earth showed Pebble and some of the other courses have the same circles.  Google Earth is a really cool program.  I hope they fill in some of the areas with poor resolution over time.

...and 17 Mile Drive really comes THAT close??? :o
Not so much a 'Highway to Hell' more of a 'Road to Shangri-la'...

Martin,
I can't comment for CPC, but I can give you a little insight about irrigation practices on the central coast of California.
From Monterey to San Francisco there is basically no rain from April to October, so golf courses are totally dependent on irrigation during those months. That being said, the ocean has a very moderating effect on the weather. Temperatures range in the 60's, fog or overcast is present many days (like today) burning off mid-morning, sometimes staying all day. Summer, as many know it, is the end of August, September and October with glorious days and temps in the 70's, maybe an 80 here or there. It rarely reaches 90 on the coast and when it does, it's front page news.
At Half Moon Bay, 60 miles north of here and right on the ocean, I watered fairways once or twice weekly until September when I had to increase the frequency. Where I am now, a mile inland and 30 miles north of Monterey I water every other, to every third day.
Of course different courses have different soils, microclimates and water quality, all of which would affect the irrigation regime.

Martin,

Pan over to the clubhouse area and you'll see that the tee shot on #1 goes OVER 17-Mile Drive, unless you top one, then you might be in someone's windshield.

Pete,
brilliant info. Many thanks. I bet most GCAers are quietly salivating over their keyboards at the prospect of having your job!!

Scott, I remember The Huck once describing that very shot. Scary!!!

The road doesn't bother anyone and from the course it's not a distraction.  I always enjoy the walk to the 15th because I can't wait to play it.  From the space view, you can see the Mackenzie tee which is on the hill, to the right of the white car and to the left of the tee which is now used.  I believe this tee was added in the 1960's.

As for your question about the irrigation, CPC is over watered and over manicured.  The course is pristine in every aspect which looks out of place for a links course.  I played with two members last year and told them I thought it was over manicured and they thought I was crazy.

You must be in the foggy artichoke belt ;), it's was sunny most of the weekend where I was, perhaps a little foggy in the AM for the Wharf-to-Wharf ...

OT:  I zipped out to Pasa on Saturday afternoon to look at the work on #11 ... they are finishing the final grading, have laid sod in some places and will be completing it soon.  I hope to snap some photos later in the week.  They also built and have sodded a huge new tee box for #12 ... flat, wide and deep ...

The local qualifying for the US Am is today at Pasa, playing a temporary green on #11 that is on the right side of the barranca.
