I may have found one that will be difficult to beat.

Solutia Golf Club, about 15 miles from downtown Pensacola, is a semprivate club (about 600 members) that was once owned by the Solutia Corporation (a spinoff of Monsanto) and reserved for play for employees and retirees.  A few years ago they opened memberships to the public for the ungodly sum of ......$70 per month for a family membership.  Included in the membership are unlimited golf (walking, $11 for a cart), and 25 buckets of range balls per month.  Initiation fees are...$50.

One would think that the golf course must be really second rate for that kind of money but I played it today for  the 1st time and found it interesting and reminiscent of a couple of Donald Ross courses (CC of  Asheville, Mid Pines) I've played.  Pop up greens, interesting contours, and some good shot strategy with effective use of elevation change, wetlands and water.  There's even a gator that resides on the par 3 8th hole-my playing partner calls him Henry-he's only 4-5' now but the members feed him often so he might be a problem sometime in the future ;D

The course was designed by Bill Amick in 1962-I have played only one other of his courses (Perdido Bay)-anyone have any experience with his other designs that might also evoke these Ross-like feelings?

Bear Creek Golf Resort- East & West (36 holes), Ted Robinson, circa 1980- D/FW Airport, noisy, and a bit short (6,600 yards +), but mature courses with considerable elevation changes and few flat spots.  Three membership levels without initiation and long term contract:

1)  $30 plus tax per month- unlimited range priviliges and golf for a cart fee($16)  after 12:30 p.m. six months of the year, and after as late as 3:00 during the peak of Daylight Savings Time.

2) $60+ tax monthly- same as above and golf any time during the week with preferred tee times for a cart fee; on weekends subject to level 1 hours.

3) $100+ tax- same as above and golf any time with preferred tee times for a cart fee.

Lou,

Bear Creek was where we SPLURGED when I was a trainee at InterFirst (NLE) and one of the Village People back in the early 80's.  Tempus Fugit.

$70 X 12 = $840.

Wild Horse Golf Club, Gothenburg NE is $500 annually with a $500 initiation fee that can be spread over five years. Some on this sight may have heard of Wild Horse.

I would have to think this may beat Solutia Golf Club, though I have never played there so I will reserve comment.

Mike:

Eau Claire G & CC is a top-notch course and would get my vote for this category.  I can't imagine anything else even being close.

What's the Dues at WH?

Chip - I don't get your question? There are no monthly dues. It's $500 for the entire year and a $500 up front which can be spread over five years.

No monthly dues or minimums.

There was once a time when $4K total ($6K Aus, was about 4K US then, don't know what it is now), one time fee, would allow one unlimited play at a marvelous little track called Barnbougle Dunes. Alas, not enough dreamers signed up to allow those who did to see their dream come to fruition.

Still doesn't knock it from the top of my wish list.
Big drivers and hot balls are the product of golf course design that rewards the hit one far then hit one high strategy.  Shinny showed everyone how to take care of this whole technology dilemma. - Pat Brockwell, 6/24/04

Mike, this is the last time I'm warning you about spreading the news about reasonable golf in Pensacola too widely.

Next thing you know we'll be up to our asses in Yankees!  ;D

Bill,

But remember, with Yankees comes Democrats!!! ;D

It might not be worth the trouble!

Speaking of Yankees, George Pazin will be in town next week and we need you for a third at 12:30 at PCC on Tuesday.  Let me know...

Given the current weather we'll more likely swim.

What is the latest deal at Southern Pines to join the Elks club?  As I remember it, it was about $850 in the late 90s that included unlimitted golf.

What is the difference in a non-equity membership and an unlimitted pass?  If non, then the Madison WI yearly unlimitted golf pass, offering 3 18 hole decent courses and two 9 holers is still under 1K.  My deal at Brown County (Green Bay) unlimitted pass is pretty sweet at $1130.

Like Tony says, I highly doubt there is a better deal than WH. Thank god it is a long commute for most so that it doesn't get cityfied and loose its unique charm.
No actual golf rounds were ruined or delayed, nor golf rules broken, in the taking of any photographs that may be displayed by the above forum user.

Tony Chapman,

The figures you mention boggles the mind. Wild Horse is one of the best courses I have played in recent years and if moved to California would command obscene amounts of money to become a member.

You are one lucky son of a gun.
