Was 13 at ANGC born in Springfield, NJ?
« on: July 21, 2005, 02:06:27 PM »
The other thread on the 12th at ANGC made me think of the story I have heard a number of times about the 13th hole and its genesis at Baltusrol...

From the PGA Championship website:

"A diagonal creek on the par 4 thirteenth makes this hole a very good dogleg. It was on this 424-yard hole that Bobby Jones tried for too strong a carry and ended up in the creek, a shot that cost him the 1926 U.S. Amateur. The hole left such an impression on Jones that it later became his model for the design of the thirteenth hole at Augusta National."

Any truth to this reference?

Geoff - The latest edition of Golf Magazine mentions this as well when Lee Janzen is describing what it takes to win at Baltusrol.

Tony,

Though similar in look off the tee and the back to front slope in the greens, there are a number of differences between the two holes:

Par 4 (Balt) vs. Par 5 (ANGC)
Dogleg right (Balt) vs. Dogleg left (ANGC)
Hazard front's green (ANGC) vs. Open front (Balt)
Fairway bunkers opposite hazard (Balt)* vs. No bunkers (ANGC)

* = Not sure if the bunkers were added by Rees prior to the '93 Open.

If it is true, it appears the Jones was inspired by the hole but didn't use it as a "model" as the story suggests.

The 17th at CPC and the ideal hole pictured in Macdonald's book are given as the inspiration for the 13th hole (originally a par-4).

Thanks, Tom.

Part of me thinks that all three of those holes inspired Jones and Macdonald to create ANGC's 13th.
