Too hot in the South for Summer Majors...
« on: August 14, 2005, 09:02:05 PM »
I would hope that this week will put to end any discussions that it's too hot in the south to hold majors during the summer months...  You won't see 95 to 100 degree days at The Ocean Course in 2012! ;D  Let's hear it for brisk ocean breezes...

Mike,

Have you done (or did the PGA look at) the weather probabilities for August before awarding the PGA? Whats the chance we'll get 30 mph days?

What is the chance of any 72 hole golf tournament any time of the year anywhere in the US where each round can actually be played on its respective day?!?  ;D

I think the PGA and USGA need to look further than the rota of courses we see the tournaments played on.

There are worthy courses out there with the land and other amenities needed to host a major.

I totally agree.  It's ass-anine that the USGA or the PGA won't come down the the south and hold a major.  I live in Dallas and it's hotter than hell - but can I go out and walk 18 holes in the afternoon - yes!  why can't the pros? they walk all day long - 5 to 6 days a week!   There's barely any difference in the temps from when they're here for the Colonial and Byron till now anyway.

Flordia, Texas for sure.  Probably not in Arizona though - @ 120, we might have some dangerous situations.  Too bad, because a major at a great desert track might be interesting for a change.

Why don't they move the PGA back a month to the last week in Sept? The weather would be great and with all the leaves turning, the ccourses would be beautiful.

Maybe we'd get a longer season out of it, or a season ending event.

Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

and have an autumn (Masters), a summer (US Open) and a spring (PGA) major.  Plus the four seasons of the British Open in June.

How would this compete on the TV in September with the Football (NFL) and Baseball?

Not sure.  However, last summer I played a few days when it was extremely windy.  Of course, hurricanes were passing off shore which tends to kick up some good breezes around here...

Who made a rule that players should not sweat during a Major. Weather is part of the game. I have no doubt the rotation of the US Open and PGA should look south. We have the Masters but it would be nice to have an Open and PGA every once in a while. Yes Pinehurst is in the south, but not the deep south.

Do any of our "people in the know" on here have any knowledge of the actual reasons why so few non-Masters majors are played in the southeast.

Those of you in the southeast, please list a handful of courses you deem worthy of a major in you don't mind. Take all of the logistics into account including course conditioning at the particular time of year for the specific major.

agree with JES II.  all those who want majors played in the southeast/southwest/northwest/alaska-hawaii, please provide a list of courses that are both worthy of the event and have the necessary ancillary amenities.

as you do, please also explain how these courses are better than Winged Foot West, Shinnecock, Baltusrol, Olympic, Bethpage Black, Oakland Hills, etc.

The PGA went through its phase of playing at Atlanta Athletic Club, Shoal Creek-like venues (to pick two southeastern layouts), and everybody thought the event lacked something.  turned out that what it lacked was venues that had stood the test of time.

i thought Baltusrol set up extremely well.  Lots of drama at the end and a winning score that was not much below par didn't hurt either.

Possibly, Quail Hollow in Charlotte, NC.  The players seem to like it.

Hey "Tiger",
It is south, depending on what is north to you...the point was that it should be very hot for the PGA...it was hot for the 2001 US OPEN at Southern Hills and it worked all right....I little heat never hurt anyone.

....somewhere south of Michigan.....

How does a venue fail to stand the "test of time" when an event has been held there only once (e.g. US Open in 1976)?

Plus, I guess phase of having the PGA at AAC will extend at least through 2011.

2009 Hazeltine National Golf Club Chaska, Minn. Aug. TBD
