On one hand, I enjoy the town as a backdrop, the penal bunkers, and the rhythm of watching players make pars, fight for 3's on the loop, then the Road/18th finish.  

On the other hand, its teeth probably have been taken away by the 60 degree wedge, long driving distances and the ability of new balls to fight the wind.

Is it the best venue for the Open?  What is better?

For the reasons you suggested, I would say Yes! As we all know, the surroundings, the history and the course make THE OPEN.

...but for spectator viewing No, and probably the worst!  I would think that RLGC will struggle next year with this also.

St Andrews is the most romantic and nostalgic Open venue.  

Royal St George's, Carnoustie and Muirfield are better for purely golfing reasons.  And isn't that what it's supposed to be about?

The Open at St. Andrews is the best venue in all of golf period. There is nothing like it. I love to just breath the air at St. Andrews. You add playing the course and a pint or 5 anywhere in town, say on the bench watching players go down 17 and 2 or especially a late night in the bar at the Rusacks overlooking the R@A or as Bob would say Gin in the R@A looking out.

It was just shown on TNT that they have "softened" the bunker face on The Road Hole. I wonder if we will now be told that the bunker work at The Old Course is inferior and the R&A "blew it"? Maybe Roger Rulewich is just avante garde.

Bring Deal back into the ROTA!.. Yes I am a homer but I reckon it is easily the toughest of the venues along with Carnoustie.. Most locals will tell you it is 2 shots harder than Sandwich.   Course is going to be almost 7100 yards after lenthening.. If they played the 16th as a par 4 from 470 yards, it would be one HELLACIOUS par 70 and the back 9 would spell death for many..

I realized even moreso today why I post here and read this site when a friend came up to me, and after discussing Tiger's round said "Would you really want to play there.. With those ridiculous bunkers, rock hard fairways and no tree?  And all that wind..."  I was polite but inside I was apalled..  He's a decent player, but does he really understand the game?

After watching most of today's Open coverage, the two best features of TOC are A) the greens and fairways being the same grass and cut to similar heights and B) the way tee shots are gathered into many of the fairway bunkers. Well, I guess should add C) the Road hole which is just way cool.

So how many other great links courses share A and B from my list with the Old Course? Can you putt from a mile off the greens at Muirfield? Do bunkers at Dornoch attract passing golf balls from 30 yards away?

James- Yale looks great this year thanks to Scott Ramsay.  It ALMOST makes the bunker project tolerable -  Nahh. If they had the guts to put bunkers/3rdgreen/16th green back the way they were designed by Raynor Yale would be among the top 25-50 courses in the WORLD.

Mr Rulewich is not avante garde- He blew it- He could have been a hero.

ps- Roger still contends that he did NOT soften the bunkers at Yale             .  I guess you do not agree with Roger either!
