OK. So who’s going to win the British Open?

Surely with the knowledge of TOC on this site someone has got a hot tip.

The bookies are saying Tiger’s got it in the bag but I’m not so sure. I’m inclined to go with a long hitter with flair, confidence and imagination so I’ve got a fiver each way on Cabrera at 50 to 1 and £20 on Adam Scott at 33 to 1. I’m quietly confident.

What’s the thinking?

Marc - I like your thinking. The winner will be an relatively unknown power player (see: Daly) or a plodder thinker (see: Faldo) or Tiger!!

I would add to your fold a Tim Clark, Justin Leonard or Luke Donald.

Could anyone find me the odds on Scott Gutchewski leading after the first round of play? A fiver on the former Husker may be fun!!

Is there another tournament this week? I heard The Open Championship was being played....where is the British Open?? ;D ;)

I would have suggested Donald, except that teeing it up in the first round with Jack, and Tom, may be a bit much for him.  One can only imagine the following that grouping will receive...

I think it is time for Sergio to pull through and break the horrendous curse that lingers over former British Amateur victors.

Don't know who is going to win The Open, but it would be fantastic if John Bickerton could make the cut.  He is our club tour player.  He hates links golf, but is turning a corner with his driver and putter.  We have a load of members who are going to head up if Johnnie Bic makes the cut.  You gotta support this kinda love for the game.  No digs (will try to con caddies and players who don't make the cut), but they will bring their sleeping bags and hope for the best (of course tickets can be had at the gate).  This is one of the reasons why The Open is hands down the top tournament.  These folks have me so fired up I may go!

I do like Goosen at 16-1.  Most of the odds aren't very attractive.

Given the pedigree of the last couple of champions...and the fact that he can hit it a mile...I'd recommend Scott Hend at 500 - 1.

The forecast is looking decidely warm and wind free through the weekend.  What will happen with the forecast in the next few days is a topic of limitedless proportions.  I have cash on Goosen, but the odds are really stingy this year.  I think the bookies will do very well.  I am going to wait for some last minute odds.  There are a few guys that could pay much better odds on Thursday than today.

My head says Tiger, but my heart will be with Watson and Duval.

In deference to the fact that this is a US site, I did go with the British although I am well aware that there is only one “The Open” with everything else being just a copy. As Peter Dawson will say on Sunday evening, there is only one champion golfer in 2005.

Scott Hend at 500 to 1 and the longest hitter on tour by some margin. I like it. In fact I’ve invested a fiver each way. The question is; does he know where it’s going?

I thought about Sergio at 20’s but with Adam Scott at 33, I had to go with him.

Hey, you can get Jack at 10,000 to 1. You never know, he might get inspired.

By the way, if you go with Paddy Power betting they will go top six on the each way bets.

Bickie is a strange sort of bloke.  He doesn't buy into the funk of links.  His definition of links is funky bounces.  Consequently, courses such as Muirfield do not qualify as links in his opinion.  He is playing well.  He qualified at Sunningdale with 66-67, third, I think.  Also, just to clear things up, Bickie is not the club pro, he is a member (and has been one since junior days) who is a touring professional.  Bickie is a solid citizen.  He will stand on the first tee and play with anybody who will make up a fourball.

Omen - member at Victoria GC as was Peter Thomson who won at St Andrews 60 years ago and his final Open 50 years ago.

The course will be much like 2000, very hard and fast (with heavier rough).  Weather forecast is mostly dry with very little wind.  It has been roasting over here (85 degrees yesterday!), so the turf will be baked and the Euros will be dying of heat prostration.

Hard not to go with Tiger.......

I'm sure he's the one TEPaul "knows" will win but won't tell us!

F.Y.I. My company Tour Edge Golf had two wins on tour last weekend with Sean O'Hair winning the John Deere Classic ( 19* J-Max Tour Ironwood in the bag ) and Tim Clark winning the Barclays Scottish Open ( Exotics 15* 3 Wood in the bag )!!!!!! We don't pay "tee up" money, but we do now have a full time rep ( Andy Harris ) on the PGA Tour. We're averaging 8 to 10 guys a week with Tour Edge clubs in the bag and growing every tournament. Our Exotics Fairway Woods in particular are generating a lot of "buzz" amongst the players!
