Here are a few sample pages from th new book on Woodhall Spa by Richard Latham (reproduced here with his permission).  









The newly-commissioned photographs by Eric Hepworth are some of the finest I've ever seen.  The art work detailing every single alteration since the 1930s is superb.  

There are some lovely period photos and Latham makes what he can of deducing all there is to be deduced about the pre-Hotchkin courses.  

There is a quibble - the textual editing has not been good.

Thank you for posting this...  I used to play County Stuff against Richard and also used to play in his tournament which he use to run at the start of the year in La Manga - Top guy!

Not only will I buy one... but I will add that it is quite simply one of the best golf courses I have ever played - and toughest!

I saw this book the other day, and I must say it is excellent, very well done and defintiely produced with golf architectural emphasis.

SV Hotchkin is almost always given the bulk of the credit for this course...should Colt get equal or even greater credit?

Tom,

Richard does what he can to deduce what the original Vardon and later Colt courses may have been like.  Colt's routing was pretty well the same as today's course, so it would seem that he laid the foundation of the course, Hotchkin refining it over time.  There are no extant maps of the Vardon or Colt courses, but, from surviving photographs, even some of Vardon's work is still visible today.
