2006 Heineken at Royal Melbourne Cancelled
« on: July 06, 2005, 07:50:02 PM »
It was announced today that the heineken at Royal Melbourne will not be held in February 2006.  When the deadline for European Tour sanctioning came up, the event was about $2 million short.  The European Tour will be at the Dubai Desert Classic that week instead.

Oh well, some other event may move to Royal Melbourne (soon hopefully).  And the Nationwide Tour is still at Royal Adelaide for one week in February 2006.

This a near catastrophe!! I am now searching my TIVO archives to be sure to save the last footage of RMGC for my mid-winter season fix...arghhhh!! :P

What am I going to do for all those cold 2am night-time ice-cream/great golf (thru the eyelids) addictions???  ???

Ernie Els was quoted in the UK press this week as saying that he might in future not be travelling down to Australia as he has done in the recent past - on the basis that his demanding schedule has contributed to his modest form this year.

If so that will be a real shame - and not encourage the likes of Heineken - given that he has added a lot to those events over the years.

Phillip

the tournament organisers commented that they could get two or three headline names, but that the field dropped away pretty quickly.  Travel issues are certainly a factor.  If Ernie was going to drop out (and he is the world traveller amonst the top 4, so I can't blame him if he did) then I expect getting the sponsorship $'s becomes even harder.

Ernie had a very lucrative contract to play the Heineken. And in his first year of fulfilling it, he made it clear he would not consider renewing. Thus, it was known in late 2003 after negotiations with other top 10 players fizzed that the event would likely be wound up after 2005.
