That to me is the beauty of the Road Hole: It doesn't take hitting it out of bounds to make a high score. One can accomplish that with little problem.

I totally agree.  Two of the most memorable drives I ever hit yielded an 8-iron and 6-iron in from the extreme right-side of the 17th fairway.  Did I hit the green either time?  Oh, no - I did not.  For the master of the push-fade,  those were the two most intimidating golf shots I've ever faced.  I  was totally defeated in the fairway from position "A."

Speaking of the Road Hole, I'm sure this interestng story has been told on here but if not, here goes.

In something like the World Cup at TOC Bobby Jones was the captain and he instructed his team to never try to hit the Road Hole green in two. But on the last day or perhaps the last match out it became apparent that the US needed something like a one under par finish on the last two holes. Bill Hyndman was playing for the USA. On the 17th fairway he was within range of the Road Hole green and he asked Bob Jones what he should do. Jones told him he could go for it if he wanted to and Hyndman hit a spectacular shot and made 3 on the Road Hole and parred the last hole.

Apparently in Bill Hyndman's house behind the 8th green at HVGC hung a photogrograph that was sent to him by Jones of him hitting that shot with an inscription on the photograph  that said;

"The great shot I ever saw"

I've only played the Road Hole once and of course it is a sad tale.  I bailed out from the sheds and pull hooked the ball into a fairly fluffy lie in the short left rough.  I tell the caddy, "Give me the cleek," (which I'd been hitting well all day, actually a 22* Sonartec thingy), and he demurs, "Sir, you'd best hit an iron to be safe, etc etc," and of course I hit the 5-iron into the f**cking Scholars Bunker from which I have to pitch sideways and eventually make a 6.

........

I ask you now, could this double bogey be considered my fault, or should it have been deducted from the gratuity eventually handed to my caddy, albeit grudgingly?
