Woods says Augusta changes unnecessary

Good to see Tiger's comments on Augusta's changes in a CBS article.  The link can be found on yahoo's main page under sports.

I think Tiger makes two very valid points:

1) Even if AGNC now plays shorter tee to green than it used to, the green speeds have gotten so much faster over the past 20-30 years that they have replaced length as the primary defense of the course.
2) The Masters tournament has been played under wet conditions every year since the course was lengthened in 2001. If the Masters was played under firm & fast conditions, no one would break par.

Tiger wants Hootie to put a retractable dome over the course so that it will play fast and firm. ;D

By the way, I've oftened wondered why the USGA or The Masters does not use tarpaulins a la baseball.

How funny is it that Shivas made the same point David lists as Tiger point #1 a few days ago? Maybe Tiger lurks here.... :)

Steve -

They did a thing during the recent Masters that showed how the greens have a new thing installed that literally sucks the water out of the greens. Seems a lot easier than tarps.

When will AGNC install those suction devices on the fairways? ;D

It's probably less expensive than a retractable dome!

George,

There are many fairways sections that have been rebult as large greens with the sub air as well. Almost all of the cross walks also now have subair.

I think they're looking into the many varieties of artificial turf as an option as well...

Mr. Woods is entitled to his opinion, but has he thought that:

Maybe the committee will not use every yard available all the time, and that the extra yardage adds flexilbility to the course- it can be made longer in f&f conditions, and shortened in soft and slow conditions, and varied depending on wind conditions;

Maybe adding length was inevitable, and the club has the time and resources to do it now, so why not get it out of the way;

Maybe if f&f conditions are available in the tournament and the course is maxed out, the greens can be slowed down a touch and hole locations chosen to make hitting mid and long irons manageable;

Maybe the committee has questioned and wrestled with these changes and gotten excellent architectural advice and information from shotlink and other sources and they have a prety good idea of what to expect for results from the changes.

My guess is that these guys are good and they'll do just fine regardless of the set up. One hundred and fifty five yards spead over several holes is not going to make a three shot per round difference to these guys. Let's see the results before we pass judgement. If the changes don't work, they can always use the forward tees.
